Dear Mr Morley
I am writing to you regarding your follow up freedom of information request sent to us on 3 May 2019.
In processing your request we have reviewed the response that we sent to your original request of 10 April 2019 and have discovered that there was an error in our response. First of all please accept our sincerest apologies for one piece of incorrect information which was given in error. The issue on 27 December 2015 - Incorrect Lotto Raffle information details on temporary results page published on website actually related to publishing the wrong prize amounts, not the incorrect numbers.
Please note that the Commission does not publish the results of National Lottery draws on its website. This is done by Camelot, the operator of the National Lottery.
Please see the following answers to your questions relating to the remaining two dates we gave to you where incorrect numbers were published on Camelot’s website:
10 October 2015 - Incorrect Lotto Millionaire Raffle results published on website:
a)how long it was before you realised the incorrect results were posted?
The wrong numbers were on Camelot’s website for one hour.
b)how you realised that incorrect results had been posted?
Camelot informed the Commission of the error.
c)what you did (and have done) to ensure this doesn't recur?
The Commission undertook a full regulatory investigation of Camelot, including seeking representations on the circumstances of the error from them. The Commission concluded that there was a contravention of the licence requirements and a licence breach was recorded on 23 June 2016. The outcome of which was A financial penalty of £300,000 being imposed.
In addition the Commission noted to Camelot that:
-it took too long for a clear and explicit correction to be made and that the Commission expects an improvement in its approach to any future issues
-the Commission is going to engage with Camelot on its control environment framework, with particular reference to digital content generation.
d)what percentage of tickets you would estimate were thrown away as a result of people checking the incorrect results?
After completing a search of a our records I can confirm that this Information is not held by the Commission.
24 September 2009 - Incorrect Lotto draw result number on National Lottery website:
a)how long it was before you realised the incorrect results were posted?
The wrong numbers were on Camelot’s website for approximately three hours.
b)how you realised that incorrect results had been posted?
c)Camelot informed the Commission of the error.
d)what you did (and have done) to ensure this doesn't recur?
The Commission’s view was that there were contraventions of licence requirements and a licence breach was recorded on 14 May 2010. The Commission was satisfied that the case resulted from problems with the automated entry of results to the website and subsequent human error when manually updating the results page.
e)what percentage of tickets you would estimate were thrown away as a result of people checking the incorrect results?
After completing a search of a our records I can confirm that this Information is not held by the Commission.
