Funding of museums/galleries by Chinese entities and representation of artists from certain groups
Dear The British Museum,
I’m conducting an investigation into Asian representation in UK museums and art galleries as well as the amount of funding received by Chinese entities. Please provide answers to the following questions:
Firstly, please tell me about the amount of funding your institution receives from Chinese entities:
1. Please tell me the total amount of annual funding (including sponsorship, donations, gifts and other forms of financial support) from Chinese entities to your institution in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
2. Please provide a breakdown for each donation (at minimum: entity giving the donation; ultimate beneficial owner of the entity; year of donation; amount of donation; purpose of donation).
3. Please also specify the percentage of total corporate sponsorship.
To clarify what I mean by Chinese entities I mean any of the following:
For Chinese corporations I include those where the entity's headquarters and/or founded location is in China.
For trusts and foundations I would exclude the term charitable, and instead include:
a) grant-giving trusts registered in China
b) grant-giving government affiliated bodies registered in China
For individuals I would include those who have Chinese citizenship.
Please could you also you direct me to exhibitions featuring or focused on artists from the following groups in 2019, 2020 and 2021?
1. Mainland Chinese artists
2. Taiwanese artists
3. Hong Kong artists
4. Tibetan artists
5. Uyghur artists
Yours faithfully,

Dear [name removed]
We are writing with regard to your recent Freedom of Information request,
the response to which is due today. As we are applying the exemption
contained in s.43(2) FOIA to some of the information which you have
requested because we consider that its release would prejudice the
commercial interests of the Museum, we require further time to carry out
the public interest test as provided under s.10(3) Freedom of Information
Act (2000).
We apologise for any inconvenience which this delay may cause. We hope to
be in a position to send you our response in the next few days.
