Hi Naomi,
Please find attached a response to your recent FOI request.
1. What funding (if any) do you offer to small businesses in the local area?
We currently offer the following grant schemes to small businesses in the local area:
- Citylife Business Grant - [1]https://www.bipcnortheast.co.uk/citylife...
- Business Energy Efficiency Team (BEST) Grant - [2]https://www.best-ne.co.uk/grants/
- Clean Air Zone (CAZ) Grant - [3]https://www.breathe-cleanair.com/grants (note: these grants are available to all businesses, regardless of size)
2. How many grants (if any) do you offer to small businesses in the local area?
64 Citylife Business Grants have been awarded to small businesses in the local area since the 1^st April 2024.
10 BEST grants have been awarded to small businesses in the local area since 1^st April 2023.
955 vehicles have been replaced thanks to CAV grants since the scheme went live in 2022. All grants were awards to businesses, but our records do not show how many would be considered ‘small’.
3. If funding or grants are offered, please can you provide the specific monetary figures that are available to small businesses in the local area.
Maximum value of a Citylife Business Grant is £3,600, with the average value to date being £858.
Maximum value of a BEST grant to date is £12,793.95, with the average value being £8.228.31.
The CAZ grants offer different values depending on the vehicle e.g.
• Taxis, including Hackney carriage and private hire vehicles – up to
£3,500
• Wheelchair accessible taxis, including Hackney Carriage and private
hire vehicles – up to £4,000

During the period 2021 – 2023, the Council administered a wide variety of
grant schemes targeted towards supporting local businesses. Unfortunately
our records do not show how many of the grant recipients would have been
considered ‘small’.
In calendar year 2021, the Council administered approximately 11,800
individual grants to local businesses
In calendar year 2022, the Council administered approximately 1,500
individual grants to local businesses
In calendar year 2023, the Council administered approximately 800
