Freemasonry among officers and elected members

The request was successful.

Dear Durham County Council,

Please could you tell me whether elected members or employed officers of Durham County Council are required to declare whether they are freemasons, either at recruitment/election or during subsequent employment/elected service?

If members or staff are permitted to be freemasons during their period of association with DCC, are there any restrictions placed on them in their work, e.g. in terms of decision-making about recruitment, restructuring and redundancy; or decisions related to other sensitive issues such as planning applications, child protection, etc.?

Yours faithfully,

Ms H Wale

Dear Information Management Team,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

However, I do find what you say alarming, since I'm sure you know that freemasonry is still widespread in County Durham. I believe that other public bodies interpret human rights legislation rather differently to DCC in this respect.

Yours sincerely,

Ms H Wale
