Freedom of Information Request: Volume of Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs)
Dear West Lancashire Borough Council,
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Please provide the following details:
The total number of Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) received by your authority for each of the last three years (2021, 2022, and 2023).
The number of DSARs completed within the statutory one-month timeframe during each year.
The number of DSARs that required an extension beyond the one-month timeframe, along with the average length of extensions granted.
Any recorded costs (e.g., staff time, software, or other resources) associated with processing DSARs for each of these years.
If possible, please provide this information in a tabular format.
If the cost of fulfilling this request exceeds the statutory limit, I would be grateful if you could provide advice and assistance to refine the request.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Lance Barker

Dear Craig Simpson,
Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Request for Information
Thank you for your email of 21 November 2024 where you requested
information about DSAR requests.
The information you requested is below. If you have any queries
concerning the information provided, please do not hesitate to contact me.
1. The total number of Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) received by
your authority for each of the last three years (2021, 2022, and

Please note, the majority of these requests will have been internal
requests, with one West Lancashire Borough Council team asking for
information from another. Please not that this has greatly reduced during
the year 2024/2025 due to a process review.
We did not record the exact number of internal versus external requests
for these years, however with effect for the financial year from
2024/2025, this data is now recorded.
2. The number of DSARs completed within the statutory one-month timeframe
during each year.
Financial year 2021/2022 – 505
Financial year 2022/2023 – 668
Financial year 2023/2024 – 551
3. The number of DSARs that required an extension beyond the one-month
timeframe, along with the average length of extensions granted.

4. Any recorded costs (e.g., staff time, software, or other resources)
associated with processing DSARs for each of these years.
No costs – processing is facilitated by Excel spreadsheets and undertaken
as part of the day-to-day role of the IG team.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within 40 working days of the date of receipt of the response to
your original letter and should be addressed to: Jacqui Pendleton,
