The request was partially successful.

Dear University of Reading,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, could you please provide me with the following information:

COUNSELLING AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES - UNIVERSITY STAFF

1. The total number of staff that accessed University counselling and mental health services in the last eight academic years (please present in a table showing figures for each academic year and breakdown by category (e.g. anxiety, bereavement loss, work-related etc...))

a) How many were academic staff?
b) How many were professional services staff?
c) How many were male?
d) How many were female?

2. Where data are available in the last eight years, please detail what was the average wait time for a staff member applying to see a counsellor to seeing a counsellor?

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

3. During the last eight academic years how many staff members were referred to Occupational Health (please highlight whether these were self-referrals, management referrals, or referrals falling into different categories)?

a) How many were academic staff?
b) How many were professional services staff?
c) How many were male?
d) How many were female?

4. How many staff members are currently on the waiting list to see Occupational Health?

If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using exemptions in the Data Protection Act, please inform me of that fact and cite the exemptions used.

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. If some parts of this request are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the available data as soon as possible.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you within the 20 working day statutory time period.

Yours faithfully,

Nicky Michaels

Dear Nicky Michaels,
We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.

We can confirm that we hold some information of the description specified
in your request.

The University does not hold records which go back as far as eight years.
As requested we have provided data in respect of the years held. Please
note, in respect of question 1 of your request, male/female breakdown was
not recorded prior to 2015. In respect of question 3, breakdowns of
academic or professional, and male or female staff are also not held for
2011-12 and 2012-13 years.

‘Average wait times’ are also not recorded. To locate information on
specific appointment dates (in order that the duration between
appointments could be calculated) would require manual checking of
individual records that we estimate would engage cost limits (take in
excess of 18 hours) so we have provided as much data as we were able to
within these cost limits and our responses are given below.

We are required to include details of our complaints procedures, including
your rights to apply to the Information Commissioner.  The procedure is
detailed in our Freedom of Information and Environmental Information
Regulations policy on the web at
[1]www.reading.ac.uk/freedom-of-information-policy

If we are unable to resolve any complaint, you can complain to the
Information Commissioner, the independent body who oversees the access to
information regimes:

Dear IMPS,
Thank you for your response. I would be grateful if you could provide the information that you do have available to you in respect of counselling services broken down by year; and the same with respect to counselling services.

Yours sincerely,

Nicky Michaels

Dear IMPS,
Apologies for the typographical error - second utterance of 'counselling services' should have read occupational health referrals!

Yours sincerely,

Nicky Michaels

Dear Nicky

There were two tables in our response which provided the information we had available and without engaging the cost limits for counselling services and occupational health referrals. There appears to be formatting issues when FOIs are responded to via What Do They Know.

I have attached our response sent yesterday as it may not be affected by the formatting restrictions emails have. Please let us know if this does not work, if so we can take it out the table and put it line by line.

Alternatively, do you have an email address we could forward the response onto?

Kind regards,

Sinead Latham

Dear IMPS,
Thanks so much for getting back to me.
Would you be able to embed table 2 in an attachment please? It appears to have been missed off. All other aspects of your email, noted.
Yours sincerely,

Nicky Michaels
