The request was successful.

Dear NHS Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group,

We are currently researching the change in GP prescribing behaviour in urinary tract infections.

Please can you provide us with the following information:

Do you have a formulary used by primary care prescribers? If so, what is the current status of nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim with respect to urinary tract infections (e.g. first line, second line, etc)

Has the status of either nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim changed in the formulary since November 2014? If so, can you please provide the previous status(es) and details of the date(s) of change.

Have you had any work plans in place with respect to nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim prescribing since 2014? If so, can you please provide documents and start date.

Have you had any GP prescribing incentive schemes or similar which relate to trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin prescribing since November 2014? If so, can you please provide the documents.

Yours faithfully,

Ben Goldacre and Richard Croker

Dear Ben Goldacre and Richard Croker

Thank you for your enquiry requesting information under the Freedom of

Please find below our response to your request:

Do you have a formulary used by primary care prescribers?  If so, what is
the current status of nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim with respect to
urinary tract infections (e.g. first line, second line, etc)

i) Attached is our current 'Management of Infections in Primary Care

Nitrofurantoin is 1st line and trimethoprim is 2nd line option (however
may be 1st line alternative if resistance risk is low in individual).

Has the status of either nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim changed in the
formulary since November 2014?  If so, can you please provide the previous
status(es) and details of the date(s) of change.

ii) Yes the formulary advice has changed since Nov 2014.

Trimethoprim and nitrofurantoin was both previously our 1st line options
(approx. 2015/16)

Have you had any work plans in place with respect to nitrofurantoin and
trimethoprim prescribing since 2014?  If so, can you please provide
documents and start date.

iii) Our work plans with respect to nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim
prescribing since 2014 included-

a) making GPs/other healthcare colleagues aware of updated PHE advice via
our DrugWatch Extra newsletter - Nov 2016 (see attached),

b) use of ScriptSwitch (a prescribing support decision software) to remind
GPs of our local guidelines- Dec 2016,

c) use of AccuRx to support selected GP practices (integrated prescribing
support tool) on advice from PHE/local guidelines- from March 2017,

d) discussions at GP collaborative meetings - Oct 2016 and April 2017,

e) inclusion as one of the entry criteria in our Prescribing Quality and
Savings Scheme 2017-18 (see attached)

f) discussions during GP practice visits of our current scheme - June to
August 2017

Have you had any GP prescribing incentive schemes or similar which relate
to trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin prescribing since November 2014?  If so,
can you please provide the documents.
