Dear Department for Education,

I would like details of each local authority that has taken or is taking part in the Universal Free School Meals pilot, and the date that it started offering free school meals.

I would also like data on the proportion of students receiving free school meals in each local authority area in England in each of the last four years.

Thank you very much,

Yours faithfully,

Robert

Department for Education

Dear Mr Kaye
Thank you for your email of 1 April 2011, in which you request information
under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 about free school meal pilots
and the proportion of students receiving free school meals.

The Government is continuing to fund a two year pilot scheme, which began
in Autumn 2009, in three local authorities in deprived areas. Newham and
Durham are trialling free school lunches to all primary school children in
their maintained schools. Wolverhampton is testing extending the free
school meal eligibility rules to include pupils whose parents receive
working tax credit and have an annual income of up to -L-16,190.

Information on free school meals at LA level are published in the Schools,
Pupils and their Characteristics Statistical First Releases each year.
