Dear South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust,

I would like to gain some information on how you manage suspected
Fractured neck of femur fractures.

Do you currently have a pre-hospital neck of femur pathway? if so
could you please indicate what assessment / treatment you provide
in relation to this. and provide a copy of your pathway

Do you convey suspected neck of femur fractures to Accident &
Emergency or a dedicated hip unit at hospital?

Do you have any arrangements with Hospitals that a patient will
have an xray arranged directly on arrival?

Do you pre-alert hospitals that you are bringing them a suspected
neck of femur fracture?

Thank you for your request for information regarding Fractured neck of
femur pathways which we received on 11^th September 2015.

 

We will deal with this request in accordance with your right of access to
information we hold under the Freedom of Information Act and I attach a

obligations under this legislation. You will see from this that we are not
obliged to generate information we do not already hold in order to provide
what we are asked for, such as by collating data or formulating direct

(or extracts from them) that contain the information you have requested.

providing what we hold no later than 9^th October 2015 in accordance with
the timescales set by the Act.

requested, and explain the reason for this; and

I refer to our acknowledgement on 18^th Septebmer 2015 of your request for
information regarding fractured neck of femur pathways under the
provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.  We are able to provide the
following information:

I would like to gain some information I can confirm that South Western

Upon suspicion of a fractured neck
of femur the clinician initiates a
phone call to the hospital trauma co
coordinator nurse. The nurse
subsequently meets crew at emergency
department and confirms the
suspected fracture. The patient is
taken to x-ray for confirmation and
prepped for same day treatment.

 

There is also a pathway in place
with the Royal Devon and Exeter
Hospital. The emergency department
are pre-alerted to a fractured neck
of femur and the patient is fast
tracked to x-ray.
