Fossil fuel use, sponsorship and investment

The request was successful.

Dear The Natural History Museum,

Please could you tell me:

If you currently receive or in future plan to receive any sponsorship from fossil fuel companies.

If you have any investments (either through pension plans, direct investments or other) in fossil fuel companies and if so if you plan to divest from these and when.

If you source your electricity is from renewables and if you plan to change this and when.

Yours faithfully,

Cheryl Hall

Freedom of Info, The Natural History Museum

Dear Ms Hall

I am writing regarding your request dated 29 October for information about sponsorship from fossil fuel companies, investments in fossil fuel companies, and electricity sourcing.

The Natural History Museum is not in receipt of any current sponsorship from fossil fuel companies. BP is a Corporate Member of the Museum.

The Museum does not have any direct investments or pension plan investments in fossil fuel companies.

The Museum does not currently procure 'renewable' electricity due to the cost premium associated with it and this will not change in the foreseeable future. The Museum does however, operate a very efficient CHP (combined heat and power) tri-generation scheme and generates a significant portion of our electricity requirements on-site, thereby drastically minimising the carbon impact associated with our electrical consumption. The CHP engine is rated at 1.8MWe and burns natural gas which is, obviously, not renewable. The CHP is certified under the CHPQA scheme and the Museum participates in the EU ETS and the UK CRC, both of which are carbon reporting & cap/trade schemes.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted within two months of the date of receipt of this response to your original email and should be addressed to me.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely
