Dear Mr Staunton
Thank you for your email of 18 April 2016 requesting the following information:
I would like any information held at HQAC about the formation of 62 (2nd Glasgow)
and 122 (5th Glasgow) Squadron ATC and any detached Flights which these
Squadrons may have had or previously been itself.
Specifically I am looking for: formation date, strength of the Squadrons on formation
and original location of Squadrons on formation. I would also like to know if both
squadrons have previously had any detached flights or been a detached flight itself.
I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
A search for the information has now been completed within the Ministry of Defence, and I
can confirm that some information in scope of your request is held.
I can advise you that records show that 62 (2nd Glasgow) Squadron was formed on 1 Feb
1941, information on the the strength of the Squadron on its formation is not held. There is
no record of where the Squadron was located between 1941 and 1948. In 1948 it was
located at Fulton Road, Knightswood, Glasgow, in three nissen-type huts, and the initial
lease ran from 1948 to 1951. At some point the Squadron moved to Knightscliffe Avenue,
Glasgow but this building was destroyed by fire in February 1970 and the Squadron had to
move into temporary accommodation at Knightswood Primary School, Great Western Road,
Glasgow. In September 1975 it moved to the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve (TAVR)
Centre, Crow Road, Glasgow. It remained within the TAVR Centre and occupied new
purpose built accommodation within the site in 1986. There are no records to show that
there were any detatched flights associated with this Squadron.
Computer records show that 122 (5th Glasgow) Squadron was formed on 1 Feb 1974 and
was located in two adjoining wooden huts at the Army Reserve Centre, Walcheren
Barracks, Hotspur Road, Glasgow. However, this formation date is contradicted by the
attached paper record which states that the Squadron was formed in Feb 1941.
Unfortunately, we do not hold any other information to be able to confirm which formation
date is correct. Information on the strength of the Squadron on its formation is not held.
The Squadron remained at the Army Reserve Centre and occupied new purpose build
accommodation on the same site in 2006. There are no records to show that there were
any detatched flights associated with this Squadron.
If you are not satisfied with this response or you wish to complain about any aspect of the
handling of your request, then you should contact me in the first instance. If informal
resolution is not possible and you are still dissatisfied then you may apply for an
independent internal review by contacting the Information Rights Compliance team, 2nd
Floor, MOD Main Building, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB (e-mail
xxxxxxxxxx@xxx.xx). Please
note that any request for an internal review must be made within 40 working days of the
date on which the attempt to reach informal resolution has come to an end.
If you remain dissatisfied following an internal review, you may take your complaint to the
Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section 50 of the Freedom of Information
Act. Please note that the Information Commissioner will not investigate your case until the
MOD internal review process has been completed. Further details of the role and powers of
the Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioner's website,
