Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

I have been appointed by DWP and form BF57 has been provided to me to keep safe, to act on behalf of my son who is mentally incapacitiated and in receipt of PIP as his 'appointee'. Yesterday, 4th February 2020, i had contacted Universal Credit via telephone, being a Carer, providing full-time care to my son of 35 hours and more, I receive the Carer's Element of UC, I had a query to make.

Ian a lovely UC advisor, mentioned that he would need to check that i'd be the continuing 'appointee' for my son who has recently turned 19, remains at full time non-advanced education and as from the 1st September 2020 after his 19th birthday, and being already written to by Neil Couling's Assistant, that i'd need to apply for UC on my son's behalf, as the child element and child disability element shall cease as of the 31st August 2020.

My question is: if i have already been appointed by DWP to act as the appointee for my sons benefits, then is Ian the UC advisor incorrect in saying that i may not be the acting appointee and a home visit maybe required for forms to be filled out and be re appointed as my son's 'appointee'..?

It is to my understanding that Form BF57 is active and i am the 'appointee' even when claiming UC for my son in September 2020. This remains active unless there is a change in my son's disabilities, in this case NOT..

Yours faithfully,

Miss Thomas
