FOIA Balcony fires data required
Dear Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service,
Please supply me with data relating to fires on balconies on residential buildings in your area, as follows;
How many fires involving balconies occurred in total between 1st August 2022 and 31st July 2023?
In the same period, how many fires occurred where balconies where found to have contributed to the spread of the fire across the external walls?
Please provide data on the causes of any fires that started on balconies in the period (ie; barbecue, discarded cigarette, electrical appliance fault, etc) and please provide the number of occurrences for each cause.
If your incident recording system does not include "balcony" as a recorded location, could you please perform a search on free text fields in your database for the term, as I have found in the past that this often returns useable data.
Yours faithfully,
Mr. Hutcheon
I am out of the office until 14 August. For urgent enquiries or to submit

Good Afternoon Mr Hutcheon,
Further to your request of 03^rd August 2023, which we have treated as a
Freedom of Information request, please find below our response to the
information that you requested.
Query:
How many fires involving balconies occurred in total between 1st August
2022 and 31st July 2023?
In the same period, how many fires occurred where balconies where found to
have contributed to the spread of the fire across the external walls?
Please provide data on the causes of any fires that started on balconies
in the period (i.e.; barbecue, discarded cigarette, electrical appliance
fault, etc) and please provide the number of occurrences for each cause.
Response:
We don’t have a specific option concerning fires involving balconies
within our Incident Recording System. However, we have searched the
incident narrative log concerning your request for balcony fires, this
search showed we had one fire on a balcony between 01/08/2022 and
31/07/2023. The cause of this fire was the use of an air heat gun to
seal a roof joint.
I trust that this answers your queries, however, if you are unhappy with
the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make
a complaint or request a review of the decision, you should write to the
Information Governance Team, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service,
Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, Hulse Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire
SP1 3NR within 40 working days of receipt of the original
decision. Alternatively, you can
email [1][email address] .
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint or review, you
may apply directly to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for a
decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have
exhausted the complaints procedure at the Fire Authority. The ICO can be
contacted at:
