FOI REQUEST 348, regarding student drop-out rates (Bishop Grosseteste
University)

Emailed and received by the University: 17th February 2022

Acknowledged: 21st February 2022

Dear Laura Stewart-Liberty,

I write in response to your recent Freedom of Information request relating
to student drop-out rate at the University.  A copy of your full request
is attached below. Where information cannot be provided, the reasons are
explained. Please accept my apologies on behalf of the University for the
lateness of our reply, due to more time being needed to ensure accuracy.

Request details:

For each academic year from 2017 to present (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20,
2020-21, 2021-22, up to the date this FOI request is received), I would
like to know the following:

(1) total number of undergraduate students, and total number of
postgraduate students enrolled in each academic year;

(2) total number of undergraduate students who have dropped out, ceased,
or interrupted their studies unofficially or officially in each academic
year;

(3) total number of postgraduate students who have also dropped out,
ceased, or interrupted their studies unofficially or officially in each
academic year.

I would like the above information divided by sex of the student, and the
academic department of study to be indicated, if possible.

Partial response:

Our response is contained in the attached spreadsheet. The numbers
provided include students who have withdrawn or intercalated in each year.
Our definitions of ‘withdrawal’ and ‘intercalation’ can be found online in
our Code of Practice for Intercalation (Suspension of Studies) and our
Withdrawal from Study Application, which you can find here:
https://www.bishopg.ac.uk/about-bgu/poli...

Section 40 (2) personal information

You will see that some information is partly withheld under Section 40,
part 2 of FOIA (2000) – the exemption for personal information about
persons other than the FOI applicant. It is the University’s policy to
consider withholding information where there are fewer than five
individuals in a group and where the information requested has been deemed
to constitute personal data. This is in accordance with the terms of the
exemption whereby information relating to an identifiable, living person
or persons is exempt from disclosure if disclosure would contravene any of
the principles set out in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
(2016) or the Data Protection Act (2018). A disclosure made under FOI
constitutes a disclosure to the world at large. Taking account of all the
circumstances relevant to this request, the University deems that to
disclose the exact number of students falling into categories of academic
year, sex and programme group, in instances where those numbers are fewer
than five, or where partial redaction would still enable identification of
those numbers by using the totals for instance, would be likely to enable
identification of persons involved and would contravene their expectations
of confidentiality.

Please contact me if you have any queries about this email
([Bishop Grosseteste University request email]). If you are dissatisfied with the service you
have received in relation to your request and wish to make a complaint
