PUBLIC / CYHOEDDUS

Dear Laura Stewart-Liberty

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your request for information received on 17^th February
2022. The University’s response is attached and below.

For each academic year from 2017 to present (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20,
2020-21, 2021-22, up to the date this FOI request is received), I would
like to know the following:

(1) total number of undergraduate students, and total number of
postgraduate students enrolled in each academic year;

(2) total number of undergraduate students who have dropped out, ceased,
or interrupted their studies unofficially or officially in each academic
year;

(3) total number of postgraduate students who have also dropped out,
ceased, or interrupted their studies unofficially or officially in each
academic year.

I would like the above information divided by sex of the student, and the
academic department of study to be indicated, if possible.

Owing to the small number of individuals in certain categories it is
considered that the University, if it were to disclose the level of detail
requested (academic year, gender of student, Faculty in which they were
enrolled, whether they discontinued, withdrew or interrupted their
studies) would be making available data about an individual, or a small
number of individuals, from which they could be identified, either from
this information alone, or a combination of this information and other
information otherwise available to the public.  It is therefore considered
that providing further detail is exempt from disclosure by virtue of
Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (personal
information).  Personal data is defined as ‘data which relate to a living
individual who can be identified: from this data, or from this data and
other information which is in the possession of, or is likely to come into
the possession of the data controller’.

Individuals have an expectation that their information is kept
confidentially and it is our belief that such disclosure would not meet
any of the conditions set out in Article 6 of the GDPR.

In accordance with section 17 of the Freedom of Information Act, this
letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this part of your request.

Should you have any further queries do not hesitate to contact the Head of
Compliance, University of South Wales, Pontypridd, CF37 1DL. If you are
not satisfied with the University’s response, you are entitled to use the
University’s complaints procedure available from
