Graham made this Freedom of Information request to Highways England Company Limited

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Highways England Company Limited,

The first part of this request (1-11) - referring specifically to the M6 between Junctions 16-19 - is to be informed of:

1 the number of vehicle accidents which have taken place on the M6 Motorway, between Junctions 16 and 19 in the years 2015 to 2018 (up to YTD), shown annually?

2 of those accidents, how many resulted in injuries, and to how many people?

3 of those accidents, how many resulted in deaths, and to how many people?

4 when was the 'Smart' motorway begun? and when will it be completed?

5 how many accidents per month, during the 'Smart' motorway's time of alteration and operation, have taken place?

6 of those accidents, how many resulted in injuries, and to how many people?

7 of those accidents, how many resulted in death, and to how many people?

8 since the inception of the 'Smart' motorway, on how many occasions has traffic been turned off the motorway and onto ordinary roads, because of a)roadworks and b) accidents?

9 does hard shoulder running occur throughout the length of the M6 between Junctions 16-19? If there are any gaps in 'Smart' sections, where are they?

10 In general, will the removal of the hard shoulder cause the same issue as now, when there is an incident? What are the plans to keep traffic flowing?

11 What is the number of reported / recorded vehicle breakdowns between December 2015 - August 2018 (or as near as possible to these dates), on the stretch of motorway between J16-J19 M6.

More generally

10 how many sections of 'Smart' motorway exist in England?

11 assuming that each section of 'Smart' motorway in England has been assessed for effectiveness, safety, danger by any relevant body: what safety or danger information exists in respect of vehicles on those sections of 'Smart' motorway?

Should any of this information be published online, perhaps you could give me the links?

Thanks

Yours

Mr G Thubron
