FOI Request - children's play areas

Good morning,

Thank you for your request for information received on 23 July 2019.

The Council’s policy is to release information unless an exception can be
reasonably applied. The Council will respond within 20 working days by
either releasing the information or letting you know why it cannot release
the information. If for any reason it is not possible to respond within

which we anticipate we are able to respond.  

For your information, the Environmental Information Regulations  2004
defines a number of exceptions, which may prevent release of the
information you have requested. There will be an assessment of your
request and if any of the exception categories apply then the information
may not be released. You will be informed if this is the case, including
your rights of appeal against the refusal to disclose the information.

Good afternoon,

Following your request for information received on 23 July 2019 please see
the below response:

1)      How many council owned public children’s play areas (by which I
mean parks, playgrounds, adventure playgrounds, assault courses and any
other play areas) do you currently operate (latest figures available)

38 play areas owned and operated directly by Welwyn Hatfield Borough
Council.

There are currently five public children’s play areas managed under
contract by the council’s main leisure contractor in local parks and
playing fields, one ropes adventure course managed by a specialist
contractor on the council’s behalf, and one skate park managed by the
council directly.

2)      How many council owned public children’s play areas did you own or
operate in the financial year 2009/2010

38 play areas owned and operated directly by Welwyn Hatfield Borough
Council.

There were five public children’s play areas managed under contract by the
council’s main leisure contractor in local parks and playing fields in
2009-10.

3)      How many council owned public children’s play areas were sold, or
closed, from the financial year 2009/2010 to the present date?

None that were owned and operated directly by Welwyn Hatfield Borough
Council.

There have been no public children’s play areas sold or closed from
2009-10 to the present date which are managed under contract by the
council’s main leisure contractor in local parks and playing fields.

4)      If the figures are held, what was the area covered by children's
play areas that you owned measured by square feet in 2009/10, and on the
most recent date for which figures are available?

Figures not held for areas owned and operated directly by Welwyn Hatfield
Borough Council.

The five public children’s play areas managed under contract by the
council’s main leisure contractor in 2009-10 accounted for approximately
8,340 square metres in size. With the addition of a ropes adventure course
and a skate park since this time this has increased the overall size to
approximately 11,250 square metres available for local people. One metre
is the equivalent of 3.28 feet.
