FOI - number of prisoners per cell at each prison, prison capacity against population

Cat McGinnity made this Freedom of Information request to HM Prison Service

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear HM Prison Service,

Please can you let me know the capacity of inmates per prison, against the actual current inmate population please. For example, if HMP Bristol was designed to house 300 inmates, but the current population is 400.

If possible, I would like to know how many prisoners (on average) there are per cell, against each individual UK prison. For example, '1 per cell at HMP Dartmoor, 2 per cell at HMP Bristol, 3 per cell at HMP Norwich' etc.

Yours faithfully,

Cat McGinnity
