Dear Deeside College,

I am e-mailing to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

If you have any questions or need clarification to complete my request, I would be grateful if you could contact me prior to the deadline of 20 working days from receiving my request.

I’m looking for information regarding the bereavement services which are available in your university or college. Please could you answer the following:

+Do you offer special provisions for counselling services for students specific to bereavement? Y/N
+Do you offer any support or counselling services for students? Y/N
+Do you have an institution wide policy/guidance regarding caring for students following a bereavement? Y/N
+Do your policies or practices exclusively relate to support for students who have lost parents or does your support factor in other forms of bereavement, such as losing a sibling?
+Can you tell me what special provision you have for offering extensions and academic breaks in study after a bereavement?
+How much money did you allocate to counselling and support services for bereavement per year (Jan 2016-Jan 2019)?
+If you feel you would like to offer an opinion, would you say your institution feels you are offered enough from the Government in order to support students who have experienced bereavement while studying?

I understand that under the Act, I should be entitled to a response within 20 working days. I would be grateful if you could confirm via e-mail that you have received this request.

Bethan Lloyd-Jones,

Dear Ms Damon
Please find below a response from Coleg Cambria to your FOI request.
with kindest regards

Do you offer special provisions for counselling services for students
specific to bereavement?
The College offers counselling services to all learners who require this
service.  A member of the team is trained through Cruse Bereavement and
specialises in this area.  Links are in place with external agencies
should the need to refer for further support be required.
+Do you offer any support or counselling services for students?
Yes - counselling provision is available to all learners and the College
has a team of Student Services advisers who also provide support.
+Do you have an institution  wide policy/guidance regarding caring for
students following a bereavement?
The College has a Learner Counselling Policy and also guidelines for
providing support to other learners following the death of a learner.
+Do your policies or practises exclusively relate to support for students
who have lost parents or does your support factor in other forms of
bereavement, such as losing a sibling?
The counselling service and policy are general and do not specifically
relate to loss of parent or sibling.
+Can you tell me what special provision you have for offering extensions
and academic breaks in study after a bereavement?
Extenuating circumstances are used for learners on an individual basis via
support from the curriculum area(s) following a bereavement.  Support from
the Pastoral Coach and Student Services adviser alongside counselling is
offered.  For higher education learners the extenuating/mitigating
circumstances policies of each of the partner Universities would be
applied.
+How much money did you allocate to counselling and support services for
bereavement per year (Jan 2016-Jan 2019)?
An allocation in excess of £75,000 is provided for counselling services on
an annual basis.  In addition, the College has a team of Pastoral Coach's
and Student Services advises.
+If you feel you would like to offer an opinion, would you say your
institution feels you are offered enough from the Government in order to
support students who have experienced bereavement while studying?
The College receives grant funding to provide a broad range of services to
learners.  The College uses this funding to provide a comprehensive
support package to try and meet the individual needs of learners.
