Fluoridated Milk Programme

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,

Would you please provide the following information:

1. Is the Wirral Dental Milk programme still running? If not, please answer the remainder of these questions to the best of your ability giving historical data.

2. Which organisation is funding the Wirral Dental Milk programme?

3. How many Wirral primary schools are being provided with dental milk?

4. How many primary school children are being provided with dental milk in Wirral?

5. Are there any Wirral nurseries which are being provided with dental milk?

6. How many pre-school children in Wirral nurseries are being provided with dental milk?

7. Are there any empirical results from the Wirral Dental Milk programme which have shown that dental milk is effective or ineffective in preventing tooth decay? If so, please make these available.

8 What is the name and address of the dairy which is adding sodium fluoride to the milk before it is poured into cartons?

9. Which organisation is monitoring the dairy and its handling of sodium fluoride?

10. Is the storage of sodium fluoride at the dairy in line with the requirements of the Poisons Act 1972?

11. Has the dairy signed the Poisons' Register which is held by Trading Standards (Poisons Act 1972 refers)? (Sodium fluoride is a major component of sodium fluorosilicate which is a listed poison and which has been used as rat poison in the past.)

12. Please specify the concentration of fluoride in mg which is added to each carton of dental milk and specify the volume in ml of the milk in the carton. A conversion from % to mg may be necessary. If this proves to be problematical, please provide the % of fluoride in the carton.

13. Please state the name and address of the suppliers of the sodium fluoride which is used in the Wirral dental milk programme.

14. When will the Wirral dental milk programme come to an end if it's still running?

15. Have you considered the public liability implications of the dental milk scheme by contacting the Council's insurance company? If so, what reply did you receive?

16. Is Wirral Council aware of the existence of the entry in the British National Formulary (BNF) relating to fluoride supplements for small children? If so, please compare the concentration of fluoride being added to dental milk together with the background level of fluoride Wirral' water supply and state whether or not your Council considers that the Wirral Dental Milk scheme is compatible with the recommendations in the BNF for children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, and for the ages between 3 years and 6 years. You may need to bear in mind that children are known to swallow their fluoridated toothpaste and that fluoride is now in the food chain.

I hope to hear from you within 20 working days.

Yours faithfully,

Joy Warren
