Dear Helen

Enquiry regarding flowback fluid from the Preston New Road site

Thank you for your enquiry which was received on 5 February 2019.

We respond to requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and
Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

Please see our response below, in black text, to the questions raised in
your email, in blue text.

Can you confirm that these tankers are removing the flowback liquid from
Cuadrilla’s recent attempts to frack?

Since hydraulic fracturing finished in December 2018, both flowback and
surface water have been removed from site in tankers as there is no longer
a requirement to use surface water to produce the hydraulic fracturing
fluid. As water was being stored on site, there may appear to be more
tankers leaving the site compared to the amount of rainfall we have
experienced recently. Tankers are also leaving site carrying septic waste
from the kitchen and toilet facilities. Flowback has previously been
produced and transported offsite. Some flowback may continue to be removed
from site, though may now be complete.

Can you confirm whether you know the composition of the fluid?

We hold some records of the composition of the water leaving and will be
undertaking a flowback audit in due course and will inspect records of
waste flowback sampling.

Can you confirm whether the fluid contained heavy metals?

Yes the flowback contains heavy metals.

If so which ones?

Chromium, cadmium, cobolt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel,
silver, vanadium, zinc.

Can you confirm whether the fluid contained NORMs?

An audit will be conducted shortly and an assessment of flowback fluid
composition will be included in this audit.

If so which ones?

See response above.

Can you confirm that the fluid has been disposed of safely?

We can confirm that the removal of waste water is transported to a
permitted waste facility. We’re carrying out compliance checks of the
waste treatment facilities and to date we have not identified any
non-compliance.

If so how was the waste treated?

Flowback is treated by a range of processes which include filtration,
neutralisation, precipitation, adsorption, absorption, blending and
mixing.

If not has it just been moved to another storage facility?

The waste flowback has been removed to a waste treatment site.

Dear CMBLNC Info Requests,

Thank you for your reply. Can you confirm that you will be answering the rest of my requests after your flowback audit?
I would also like to know which treatment methods were used on the flowback rather than just listing a range of possibilities.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Hart
