Flouride in water in SW12
Dear Thames Water,
Please could you
1) Provide me with fluoride levels mg/L in Sarsfeld Road and Wandsworth Common
2) Provide me with the locations (Lon/Lat) and concentrations where you have tested fluoride levels in South and Southwest London (DWI have provided me with a 2011 list but it does not include the coordinates where the samples were collected) - I am interested in the geospatial spread of fluoride not just a list!
Yours faithfully,
Dr John Studley

Request for information under Environmental Information Regulations (EIR)
Dear Dr Studley,
Thank you for writing to us requesting information on fluoride.
We do not add fluoride to our water, in any area of our supply, although
small trace elements occur naturally.
For your information, fluoride occurs naturally in soils and rocks and can
therefore be found in raw water. The concentration of fluoride depends on
the type of soil and rock the water passes through. Fluoride levels in
drinking water of 1 mg/l (1 part per million) are considered to have
health benefits by reducing the incidence of tooth decay.
The decision to fluoridate water supplies is taken by your local Strategic
Health Authority and not by Thames Water. Your health authority should be
contacted for further details on fluoridation.
As a water company we are not covered by the EIR, however results of our
water quality monitoring programme are available on our website, using the
following link,.You will need to enter a post code of the location you
require:

I trust this is of assistance.

Dear Thames Water,
Many thanks Geoffrey for your reply. I am only interested in naturally occurring fluoride. According to DWI (2012 Report) there is between 0.013-1.302 mg/L in the water supplies of London and the SE. Although you say its only a trace by the time toothpaste and tea are added it can injure cells and tissues (white cells are damaged if fluoride exceeds 0.2mg/L. I get very ill from very small amounts (0.142 mg/L - Wandsworth East)and have to drink and cook with bottled water.
Do you share data with DWI ( I noticed the link on your website) as they have provided me with the results of the 3993 samples they took in 2011 in London and SE. Unfortunately they do not include the coordinates and only place reference numbers. I would like to get some idea of the geospatial spread, rather than just a list.
Yours faithfully,
Dr John Studley

Dear Dr Studley
Thank you for writing to me. I am sorry you were unhappy with my previous
response.I am sorry to learn of your condition which is affected by
fluoride.
We are unable to supply you with details of the locations of where our
samples were taken as they are random samples taken at the cold kitchen
taps of our customers, giving out these details would infringe the Data
Protection Act. As I previously stated as a water company we are not
covered by the EIR.
With regards to fluoride levels the prescribed limit, or regulatory limit
is 1.5mg/l, as we do not fluoridate the water, the levels found in your
water are trace natural occurring amounts. The prescribed limit is based
on research carried out by World health organisation (WHO) identifying a
limit based on the most vulnerable of society, young elderly. I would
advise using your post code for our on line water quality report, and
discussing the results with your GP
I trust this clarifies the matter.
Yours sincerely

Dear Thames Water,
Thank you Geoffrey for your reply. It would appear on the basis of your reply that the DWI tests and yours are quite separate. Is that correct?
I repeat that I am only interested in naturally occurring fluoride. Many countries (China and India in particular) have recognized the dangers of even traces of naturally occurring fluoride and not only de-fluoridate water supplies but improve diet (vitamins, bioflavonoids and antioxidents) as a means of ameliorating cell and tissue damage caused by fluoride.
Most scholars and researcher (who have examined the impact of fluoride on human cells, tissues and the pineal gland) no longer accept the WHO standard of 1.5mg/L. India has dropped their standard to 1mg/L and recent research has suggested that even 0.7mg/L causes dental fluorosis. Senegal does not accept the WHO standard and have dropped their standard to 0.6mg/L. Even 0.2mg/L damages white cells so they are unable to deal with pathogens.
There have been hundred of studies that suggest that naturally occurring fluoride makes no difference to children's teeth and the recent York Report (which was hardly unbiased)was less than convincing.
I think you would do us all a huge service by defluoridating water supplies.
Sorry to lecture you
Yours faithfully,
Dr John Studley

I'm sorry you are unhappy with my responses.
Regulatory limits are set by regulatory bodies. They aren’t set by the
individual water companies.
Should you have an issue with the limits, it’s advised that you speak with
regulatory bodies such as, the World Health Organisation (WHO).
When research comes to light this will be considered in line with current
standards.
I hope this helps.
Yours sincerely
