Fisheries Protection
Dear North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority,
Until April 2010 your Authority (or its predecessors) was responsible for operating fisheries protection vessels in Welsh waters.
For the years 2008/09 and 2009/10 we would like to know:
1. Where were the vessels based.
2. For the years 2008/09 and 2009/10 how much time did those vessels spent at sea on active patrol in Welsh waters (as opposed to moored in harbour or training).
3. What proportion of these patrol hours was during the night.
4. How many incidents were attended in SACs rather than unprotected waters and what proportion is this of total investigated incidents.
The Council's primary interest at this stage is in instances of illegal/unlicensed fishing activity. So by incident I mean occasions when a fishing vessel was intercepted/investigated. I would anticipate that these incidents might arise from:
* A suspicion on the part of the crew
* Intelligence
* Reported suspicious activity (e.g. by the public)
* Routine inspections
At this stage the Council is interested in overall number of
incidents rather than a breakdown by type.
Yours faithfully,
Professor Trevor Ashenden
Town Clerk
Beaumaris Town Councl

Dear Prof Ashenden,
FOI request 29-9-12.
NWIFCA responds to your request as follows:
1. Colwyn Bay, Conwy, Llyn, Cardigan Bay,
2. This data is held by Welsh Government
3. This data is held by Welsh Government
4. This data if it exists is held by the Welsh Government. I do not recall
that the NWNWSFC collected data in a form which would answer this
question.
All incident reports for that period are now held by the Welsh Government.
Summary data was published to the Committee and on the website in
quarterly reports. The Clerk will attach sections of the relevant reports
which may be of interest.
Yours sincerely

Dear Dr Atkins
Thank you for your most helpful and comprehensive reply it provides the information we required and gives a most helpful insight into how inshore fisheries protection was organised before the transfer to the Welsh Government.
