Fires at Forestry Commission sites

D. Schofield made this Freedom of Information request to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service,

Could you please tell me how many calls to fires were attended each year, for the past five years, for the following Forestry Commission sites:

Stoke Woods
Haldon Forest Park
Chalet
Harcombe
Kenton Common
Mamhead
Dawlish Waterworks
Canonteign Forest
Great Plantation
Core Copse at East Hill
Fernworthy Forest
Eggesford Forest
Bellever Forest
Abbeyford Woods
Trinity Hill
East Devon
Staple Hill
Lydford Forest
Castle Neroche
Wych Lodge
Kennisham Hill
Chargot Wood
Northcombe
Kings Cliff
Wych Lodge
Great Wood
Castle Neroche
Staple Hill

Can I also ask for the total number of hours spent at fires for each year of the past five years too please?

I am also aware that sometimes incidents are reported vaguely such as "the woods off of London Road" without the full address. Please could you do your best to capture these incidents too when they are on Forestry Commission land. Could you also include any other Forestry Commission sites that you cover that I may have missed please.

Yours faithfully,

D. Schofield

Dear Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service,

In addition to my FOI request 'Fires at Forestry Commission sites' can I also add the following forests please?

Mortimer Forest
Wyre Forest

Yours faithfully,

D. Schofield

Dear D. Schofield,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000

Thank you for your requests, received on 21 February 2022. Upon passing
this to our subject matter experts, we are seeking some clarification from
you to understand what you are asking and/or to provide help and
assistance.

In order for us to provide the most valuable information to you, could you
possibly send us the site/map boundaries of the woodlands of interest?
This (in shape or tab files if possible) would enable us to use our GIS
software to better identify the fires that are in the Forestry Commission
areas and would possibly reduce the time needed to gather this amount of
data.

The 20-working day legislative clock will now pause (on day 12) until we
hear back from you on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Wendy Richmond (Mrs)
Information Compliance Officer

Dear D. Schofield,

Thank you for that however those links still don’t give us enough
information.

My data colleague advises that the National FC have put him in touch with
the local FC dept responsible for woodland in our area of interest, so we
are hoping they can provide the information we need to proceed. Therefore
this request is effectively still paused.

Kind regards,

Dear D. Schofield,

Just wanted to update you regarding your request. We are still trying to
ascertain a dataset for the boundaries of the Forestry Commission (FC)
sites of interest. FC provided another dataset; however, this still does
not appear to match the names of the locations you are interested in. We
continue to wait for them to contact or provide us with the correct
information to allow us to progress. Therefore, this request is still
paused unless you can advise otherwise. I suggest we consider a cut-off
date for this at which time we may then have to decline the request if we
have no further clarification to allow us to respond. I note that 21 May
will mark 3 months since you made the request…

Kind regards,

Dear Wendy,

Thank you for all the work you have been doing on this.

I think that if the FC have provided a data set of sites in Devon and Somerset's FRS area we should go ahead and use this. The list that I have compiled was from the FC website which I'm now aware doesn't cover all sites and may not be accurate (some maybe in other FRS areas). I also understand this website isn't regularly updated.

I'm also now aware there maybe some difference with how the FC names their sites. There maybe several wooded areas with their own names within a site for example.

The FC maybe able to explain if this is the case.

Yours sincerely,

D. Schofield
