Dear John,

Thank you for your request, dated 27 March 2017 requesting information on London Fire Brigade (LFB) recruitment training. I have set out my response in turn, below:

Whole-time

1. How long your whole-time recruit training courses are?

40 hours pre course learning, 11 week training course & two (2 day) workshops (1 x 3 months and 1 x 6 months upon post completion of training)

2. Approximate percentage split for the course between Classroom-base training and Physical/Practical.

As stated above, the course is made up of 3 stages: the first being 40 hours of pre course learning – this is purely theory based and takes place prior to employment. The second stage is an 11 week course which is predominantly practical training. The third stage is two (2 day) practical workshops.

3. The cost to train each whole-time recruit.

In 2011 the LFB outsourced all training to Babcock International for 25 years. You can find information on the costs involved in committee paper FEP1829 available at the following link on our website:

Retained

1. How long your retained recruit training courses are?

We do not employ retained Firefighters.

2. Briefly how the training is delivered/schedule/timetable (As they are part-time employees, extended whole-time type courses may no be possible.)
