Dear Magdalene College, Cambridge,

This is a formal request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I am writing to request information on the financial relationships the college holds with the alcohol industry and the support by the college for alcohol harm support services.

Please include the following information:

1. A portfolio statement of the alcohol production, alcohol trade and alcohol sales organisations in which Magdalene College holds direct or indirect investments, if any, specifying how many shares/bonds/assets are held and their approximate value.

2. A statement of the organisations which provide or fund alcohol harm support services in which Magdalene College holds direct or indirect investments, or to which Magdalene College has made donations within the last five financial years, if any, specifying how many shares/bonds/assets are held, and/or how many donations have been made, and their approximate value.

3. A statement of the charitable activities relating to alcohol harm support services have been undertaken by Magdalene College within the last five years, if any.

Please provide an index of relating documents.

If you are to invoke Section 43 to withhold information in relation to any of these questions please note you must provide details of the exact FOIA exemption, details of who would be prejudiced by this information, and a public interest test justifying a conclusion with arguments for and against the release of the information.

If you are to invoke Section 12 to withhold information in relation to any of these questions please provide details of how locating, retrieving and extracting this information would exceed the appropriate limit of £450 as set out in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004. Please also be aware of your duty under section 16 (1) of the Act to advise and assist me in narrowing my request to bring it within the appropriate limit.

In its guidance the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said that the requirement to respond ‘promptly’ and the requirement to respond no later than 20 working days were to be considered as separate obligations. Public bodies should be able to justify why it took them as long as 20 days to respond to requests in cases where they do not act more promptly than that ‘long stop’ deadline. I look forward to receiving your response in the next 20 working days. If you are unable to provide a response in the next 20 working days please provide an updates timeline by the deadline 16/08/2021.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this request. If you would like any clarification on the information I have asked for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours faithfully,

Megan Driver

Kathryn Gee,

Dear Megan

I refer to your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
regarding financial relationships with the alcohol industry and alcohol
harm support services. The College’s responses are below in bold.

1. A portfolio statement of the alcohol production, alcohol trade and
alcohol sales organisations in which Magdalene College holds direct or
indirect investments, if any, specifying how many shares/bonds/assets are
held and their approximate value.

This information is not held. You may find our responsible investment
policy at
[1]https://www.magd.cam.ac.uk/administratio...
helpful for general information.

2. A statement of the organisations which provide or fund alcohol harm
support services in which Magdalene College holds direct or indirect
investments (a) or to which Magdalene College has made donations (b)
within the last five financial years, if any, specifying how many
shares/bonds/assets are held, and/or how many donations have been made,
and their approximate value.

(a) This information is not held

(b) Magdalene College is an education charity and alcohol harm support is
not central to our charitable aims. As part of our community involvement
the College does, however, regularly donate to  local charities providing
mental health support and support for the homeless. Some individuals
helped by these organisations are likely to be suffering from alcohol
harm.

3. A statement of the charitable activities relating to alcohol harm
support services have been undertaken by Magdalene College within the last
five years, if any.

See above response to question 2b. There is an annual chapel collection
for a local charity supporting the homeless.

The College’s complaints procedure provides for an internal review of the
decisions regarding this response if you are dissatisfied with it.  You
should let me know if you wish to use it, letting me know your reasons for
dissatisfaction and any other matters to which the College should have
regard.  The review will be conducted by another officer of the College
who was not involved in responding to the original request.

You have a right to apply to the Information Commissioner for a decision
whether, in any specified respect, your request to the College for
information has been dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the
Freedom of Information Act.  Details may be found on the Information
Commissioner’s website at [2]www.ico.gov.uk.

Kind regards

Kathryn
