Sutton Heath

     Dear Suffolk Coastal District Council,

Could you please provide the following information for the Sutton Heath
Users Group:

Which areas of Sutton Heath administered by SCDC are covered by the Higher
Level Stewardship Scheme?

A copy of the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme was sent to you on 8 August
2011 in response to EIR432. The area of land owned by the SCDC is coloured
orange or green on the maps entitled HLS Agreement Maps 1 & 2 in Part 7 of
the agreement

How long has this scheme been in operation?

As stated in the Agreement since 1.8.09.

How much money has SCDC received in grants under this scheme for each year
of its operation?

The annual payments for the scheme are set out in Part 1c the appendices
to the HLS Agreement. Two annual payments have been received to date. One
capital payment of £13,468.76 has also been received.

How is the total annual sum arrived at- which elements of the management
regime are eligible for payment?

Part 2A of the Agreement provides a Â*Parcel based SummaryÂ* of the areas
of land entered. Land classified as HO1 (maintenance of lowland heath) or
HO2 (restoration of lowland heathland) attracts £200 per ha. Land
classified as HC8 (restoration of woodland) attracts £100 per ha.

How has the money been spent?

Year 1: £8,704 was spent on tree operations, permanent fencing repairs,
temporary electric fencing, livestock grazing & bracken treatment.

Year 2: £7,344 was spent on tree operations, fencing maintenance,
temporary electric fencing, livestock grazing, stump removal and bracken
treatment.

Year 3: £5,103 (to end of November) was spent of bracken treatment, scrub
treatment, fencing maintenance, temporary electric fencing, livestock
grazing, stump removal & brash chipping. Also £1,000 was allocated to
cover SCDC staff and transport costs.

Has the council been able to access any additional income, grant aid or
any other support to help the management of this area?

If so how have these resources been used?

No additional funding has been accessed.

Is the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme likely to continue for many more
years and where will the funding come from to maintain the area when it
finishes.

As stated in the agreement it continues to 31.7.19.

There is no information available on funding beyond this date. The Council
has received funding from Countryside Stewardship Schemes since 1991 to
support the heathland restoration works in the past as it has been a
nature conservation priority. It is quite likely that lowland heathland
will remain a UK nature conservation priority in the future.
