Financial Benefit of Cruise Ship visits to the Greenwich Ship Tier.
Dear Greenwich Borough Council,
Every year there are cruise ship visits to the Greenwich Ship Tier for up to 72 hours.
What measurable financial benefit do these cruise ship visits have with regard to passenger spend?
What revenue does the council obtain annually from cruise ships at the Greenwich Ship Tier?
Do cruise ships pay fees to the council to moor within the borough boundary?
Parking bays are suspended to facilitate coaches to take passengers out of the borough. How much annual incremental financial benefit does coach parking provide over that from other users?
Yours faithfully,
Ralph Hardwick

Dear Mr Hardwick,
EIR request: EIR-3815
Thank you for your request dated 20/03/2025
Our response is as follows:
Every year there are cruise ship visits to the Greenwich Ship Tier for up
to 72 hours.
Parking bays are suspended to facilitate coaches to take passengers out
of the borough. How much annual incremental financial benefit does coach
parking provide over that from other users?
We have interpreted the above question to mean:
How much additional annual income is accrued from bays suspended for coach
parking relative to an identical number of bays suspended for other
purposes.
The answer to this question lies in the structure of our suspension fees
which have the same structure for all regardless of what the bays are used
for and by whom. Therefore, there is no additional financial benefit to
the authority in these circumstances.

Thank you for your email dated 15/04/2025, please accept our sincere

1-3, please see below updated response.
Every year there are cruise ship visits to the Greenwich Ship Tier for up

What measurable financial benefit do these cruise ship visits have with
regard to passenger spend?
The council does not hold in-depth data specifically on spend via
passenger ships docking at Greenwich Ship Tier.
Reviewing international Mastercard transaction data within Greenwich town
centre on a handful of days that ships have docked, compared with the same
day the week prior, suggests that the impact of individual ships is
minimal. This is likely to be due to the small capacity of the ships
(500-1,000 passengers) compared to the approx. 40,000 daily volume of
people in Greenwich town centre. The broader benefit of these vessels may
be greater over a longer period of time, especially when considering the
income generated via the supply chain connected to these passenger
vessels.
It should also be noted that this location is used for domestic
dismemberment as well as for international visitors.
What revenue does the council obtain annually from cruise ships at the
Greenwich Ship Tier?
Royal Borough of Greenwich does not hold this data, please refer to Port
of London Authority
