FGM training and education for medical students
Dear Cardiff University,
Please, can you confirm if any training is provided to your medical students during their course on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and safeguarding surrounding this practice?
Please, can you confirm in what format this training is provided (online training, lectures, clinical skills training, CBL/PBL, anatomy)?
Is any teaching on FGM examinable?
Approximately how many hours are spent on this training throughout a medical degree programme?
If you do not currently provide training on this topic, do you intend to change this in the next few years?
Yours faithfully,
A Cameron

Dear Allan
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 5
February 2019 in which you requested information regarding FGM training
for medical students.
For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.
1. Please, can you confirm if any training is provided to your
medical students during their course on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
and safeguarding surrounding this practice?
We offer teaching in FGM and safeguarding. It is within a session in the
year 4 Women, Child and Family unit consolidation block. It is within a 4
1/2 hour session entitled - "Law, Ethics and Human Rights in Women’s and
Children’s Health. A doctor has a legal obligation to inform if they
believe a girl under 18 is at risk of, or has undergone FGM. Human rights
and rights of the child are important considerations in all fields of
medicine and every practicing doctor should be aware of these key issues.
This session is therefore essential for future doctors to inform
themselves of the issues." Half of this session focuses solely on FGM.
2. Please, can you confirm in what format this training is
provided (online training, lectures, clinical skills training, CBL/PBL,
anatomy)?
This session is split into a plenary lecture followed by group work and
then a wrap up plenary lecture. Also Student Selected Components (SSCs)
are offered in year 4 and year 3 around the subject of FGM.
3. Is any teaching on FGM examinable?
The sessions learning outcomes are mapped to the higher learning outcomes
and can therefore be examined within the Progress tests.
4. Approximately how many hours are spent on this training
throughout a medical degree programme?
2.25 hours in year 4. Plus time spent on the year 3 and year 4 SSCs (if
student choose this option), which is 7 weeks full-time.
5. If you do not currently provide training on this topic, do
you intend to change this in the next few years?
Not-applicable.
I trust this information satisfies your enquiry. The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
