Joao Curro,

Dear A Maqsood

Freedom of Information Request – Our Ref: FOI/BS/1168

Thank you for your email dated 31 January 2014 to the Solicitors
Regulation Authority (“SRA”) requesting information. I am treating this as
an information request under the Law Society Freedom of Information Code
of Practice ("the Code").

You have requested access to the following information:

“Could you please confirm the statistics of the individuals who applied
for exemption from training contract under paragraph 30.1 (c) (ii) of the
SRA Training Regulations in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Could you please confirm
the number of successful and unsuccessful applicants under the above
applications.”

The SRA is a part of the Law Society but acts independently in carrying
out its regulatory functions. The Law Society is not covered by the
Freedom of Information Act (the FOIA) as it is not a designated authority,
but has adopted its own voluntary Code of Practice which closely reflects
the FOIA. The Code may be found at:

The Code applies to all information held by the Society, including the
SRA, and the Information Compliance Team deals with all requests received
under the Code. We will not share information relating to your request
across the Law Society Group.

I am currently dealing with your request. Bob Stanley, Information
Compliance Manager will aim to respond formally by 03 March 2014 which is
20 working days from the receipt of your request.

Your sincerely

Joao Curro

Joao Curro,

Dear A Maqsood

Freedom of Information Request – Our Ref: FOI/BS/1168

Further to my colleague Joao Curro’s email of 03 February 2014, please
find below the response to your information request under the Law Society
Freedom of Information Code of Practice ("the Code").

The Solicitors Regulation Authority only started recording this
information at the beginning of 2012 therefore we are unable to provide
you with the data for the previous years. To do so would mean looking into
every application individually and the time required to do this would
exceed the appropriate limit of £450 set by Government regulations for
Freedom of Information and Data Protection requests. Therefore we are
unable to comply with this part of your request.  For more information
please click on the link below.

The figures for 2012 and 2013 are as follows:

  2012 2013
Granted 42 38
Refused 1 0
Withdrawn 1 5
Total: 44 43

I hope this information is of use.

Yours sincerely
