False claims to have qualifications awarded by the University

Dear University of Northampton,

Whilst I anticipate you do not have a major problem with this issue I am looking for the following information .

1. In the event that it is drawn to your attention that a person has claimed to have a degree from your University that they have not actually achieved then what is your procedure ?

2. If that non achieved degree is stated online do you request that the named individual or the host of the web page or those with control of it to remove/correct the false claim naming someone to have the award of degree which they do not have ? Also if they refused to do so would you look to further action ?

3. Would you take it upon yourselves in this situation to directly approach an employer if it appeared they may have been the victim of such a a misrepresentation ?

4. Over a period of time of the last five years do you have recorded information of on how many occasions this has occurred and with what result.

5. C an you please provide me with any documentation in relation to the above

Any other information which might further inform my quest would also be appreciated.

Dear Mr. Brown

 

I write in response to your request for information dated 7^th September,
2019, received by the University and passed to me as the University’s
Freedom of Information Officer for action.

 

In response to your question one:

1.  In the event that it is drawn to your  attention that  a person has
claimed to have  a  degree from your  University  that they have not
actually achieved  then what is your  procedure ?

The procedure carried out by the University where a person has claimed to
have a degree from us that they have not achieved is:

o We will investigate the source of the claim
o Identify any evidence or documents that support the claim
o Identify via our conferment records whether we can substantiate the
award or claim of fraud

Any subsequent actions are dependent on the findings in a-c above

 

In response to your question two:

2.  If that non achieved  degree is stated online do you request that  the

Yes – the University does request the named individual or the host of the
web page to remove or correct the false claim.

and

Yes – the University would look to further action if this request is
refused.

 

In response to your question three:

3.  Would you take it upon yourselves in this situation to directly
approach  an employer if it appeared they may have been the victim of such
a a misrepresentation ? 

This action is decided based on the circumstances of each case and in
consultation with the University’s Records Manager, following the outcome
of the investigations carried out in our response to your question one
above.

 

In response to your question four:

4.   Over a period of time of the last  five years   do you have recorded 
information of on how many occasions this has  occurred  and with what
result.

The University does not hold this information for the last five years, we
do, however, hold case histories for the last three years.

 

In response to your question five:

5.  C an you please provide me with any documentation  in relation to the
above

This information is not held by us in an anonymised format and is
therefore exempt under Section 40 (personal information) of the Freedom of
information Act 2000.

 

In response to your last point:

Any other information which might further inform  my quest  would also be
appreciated.

The University has no further relevant information.
