I am not referring to any specific students or projects. Perhaps the best course of action may be to seek correspondence of department heads.

Yours sincerely,

Sara Spary

Dear Mawesh

The time frame is 2010 - present please. Or 2012 - present if that will make the scope too broad.

The relevant departments will be those who are involved in Africa/The Americas in terms of social sciences/economics. I believe that would fall under the FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL SCIENCES?

Yours sincerely,

Sara Spary

Good morning,

I would appreciate it if you could please respond promptly to my last email.

Yours sincerely,

Sara Spary

Dear Ms Spary,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I have been making enquiries regarding your request for information and we have been having some difficulties in locating the specific information you are after. Please see below for a further explanation:

Original request:

- Please confirm if the university and its departments have ever had correspondence from Fairtrade relating to student projects including, but not limited to, PHD materials, and disputing their publication.

- If yes, please provide: the date, the correspondence redacted where necessary.

Clarification received:

- I am not referring to any specific students or projects. Perhaps the best course of action may be to seek correspondence of department heads.

- The time frame is 2010 - present please. Or 2012 - present if that will make the scope too broad.

- The relevant departments will be those who are involved in Africa/The Americas in terms of social sciences/economics. I believe that would fall under the FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL SCIENCES?

I have made enquiries with our Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences and your request is proving difficult to fulfil. There will be numerous departments across many different Faculties and not just the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences who are in some way involved in Africa / the Americas in terms of social sciences / economics. It would be extremely time-consuming to check whether all these departments would have the correspondence you are requesting. It is therefore likely that to determine whether we hold the requested information and then to locate, retrieve and extract it, would take longer than 18 hours to complete.

We have however, made enquiries of the Programme Chair for African Studies within the Centre for Multidisciplinary & Intercultural Inquiry. He has confirmed that he has not responded to any correspondence sent to him by Fairtrade and that he could not find any e-mail correspondence sent to him by Fairtrade in his files. He also further said that he did not believe that any of the programme's student dissertation projects have ever been involved with Fairtrade. Please note though that the UCL African Studies programme has only existed since 2015.

We also contacted UCL's Bartlett Development Planning Unit, who do some Social Sciences connected study. We have been told that there was one student who did his PhD on fair-trade cotton and cocoa (2010-16), focusing on India (cotton) and Ghana (cocoa). However, it is not possible for departments or even PhD supervisors to know precisely what individuals or organisations research students have been in contact with in the course of their studies. This contact will also include unsuccessful requests for information as well as longer duration serial communications or involvements.

Moreover, Fairtrade is a brand, a movement and a foundation with various different people and organisations involved in numerous completely distinct entities. We are therefore unsure of exactly what entities you are referring to for this request.

Further to the information we have been able to provide above, can you let me know whether you would like any further information and / or clarification?

If you would like us to make further enquiries, it would be helpful if you could narrow down the scope of your request.

Kind regards,

Mehwish Sultan
