Facewatch, Brazil

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for International Trade,

In the following FOI request, you noted that " DIT have provided assistance to a business which, as part of its product offering, provides Facewatch technology in Brazil": https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/6...

Please tell me, for the years 2019 and 2020:
- what is full nature of DIT "assistance"?
- has DIT issued export licence for Facewatch, or its partner Staff Security Services Ltd, for facial recognition technology/cameras to be sent to Brazil
- provide me all communication (email/text/whatsapp/minuted meetings) between DIT and Facewatch and/or Staff Security Services Ltd with regards to Brazil
- apart from Conor Burns' trip to Brazil in April 2019, has DIT had any communication with Rio state governor Wilson Witzel with regards to facial recognition technology/cameras? If so, please send me all communications (email/text/whatsapp/minuted meetings).

Yours faithfully,

Kevin McEvoy

FOI, Department for International Trade

Dear Kevin McEvoy

We can confirm that the Department for International Trade ('DIT') holds information within the scope of your Freedom of Information request. However, we need more time to consider your request.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’) obliges us to respond to requests promptly and in any case not later than 20 working days after receiving your request. However, when a qualified exemption applies to the information and an accompanying public interest test is engaged, section 10(3) of the Act allows the time for responding to be extended, in which case a full response must be provided within such time as is reasonable in all circumstances. In the case of this FOI request, we are considering section 43(2) of the Act (commercial interests).

DIT has not yet reached a decision on the balance of the public interest. Due to the need to consider, in all the circumstances of the case, where the balance of the public interest lies in relation to the information that you have requested, we require a further 20 working days.

We hope to let you have a response by 29 December 2020.

Kind regards,

Information Rights Unit
