The request was successful.

Dear University of Essex,

Out of Essex University Library's 1,945 registered external readers, how many have have made use of the library in the past year?

Out of the over 400 external readers with additional borrowing privileges how many have loaned a book in the past year?

Yours faithfully,

Freedom Of Information Requests, University of Essex

Dear Mr Spence

I am writing to respond to your Freedom of Information request of 23 July
in which you ask about external library readers.

Our current figures for external readers are as follows:

Number of external borrowers (including SCONUL Access) 1st Aug         454

Number of external readers 1st Aug       1,503

(SCONUL access, if you are not familiar with it, allows staff and students
at a university to make use of library facilities of other universities
participating in the scheme [1]http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access)

Out of Essex University Library's 1,945 registered external readers, how
many have made use of the library in the past year?

We have no figures for how many external readers enter the library.
Entrance is not controlled by card or other means, and anyone can walk in.
While we do request that visitors sign in there is no way of determining
who is a visitor. Once a visitor becomes an external reader they are free
to come and go as they please.

Out of the over 400 external readers with additional borrowing privileges
how many have loaned a book in the past year?”

Our system is able to determine if there has been some activity within a
time scale. The field in question may be updated if a book is issued,
returned or renewed. The figure for active use within these parameters is
227, and some of these will be book loans, but others will be returns or
renewals.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have any questions about
this response please do contact me.

Regards

Sara
