Dear Mr Jones,

In February 2018 you sent an information request to the V&A via
whatdotheyknow.com, which we responded to on 23 March 2018. Our attention
has been drawn to an error in the redacting of the data which we provided.
Our original response has been taken down from the whatdotheyknow site,
and we are now providing this replacement response appropriately
corrected.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher Marsden

Subject: RE: Freedom of Information request - Expenses

Dear Mr Jones,

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are happy to provide you with copies of receipts for expenses claimed
by Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, as requested. These have been
scanned and are attached in three pdf files, covering January 2017 to
February 2018. It is not generally evident from the vouchers what the
purpose was of any particular item of expenditure, and so to help make
sense of this information we are also providing a schedule of the expenses
covered (also attached as pdf) which I hope you may find helpful.

It may also be helpful to you to know that Tristram Hunt's travel and
subsistence expenses are related to the V&A’s UK and international
strategy, collaborations and network; these aspects of our work both
generate income and widen the V&A’s reach, accessibility and reputation.
Where applicable, the Director’s travel costs are paid for by the inviting
organisation, and he travels Economy or Premium Economy, unless he is
traveling overnight with meetings the following morning or where (in rare
cases) there is no alternative option, in which case he travels Business
Class.

You will see that some personal details (particularly names and contact
information for private individuals) have been redacted in the attached
copies, which we judge to be exempt from release under section 40(2) of
the Freedom of Information Act (personal information). Similarly some bank
account and supplier account numbers are also redacted, for security
purposes; this information is exempt under section 31 of the Freedom of
Information Act (Law enforcement, including prevention and detection of
crime).

The section 31 exemption is subject to a public interest test. Our
assessment is that releasing information about V&A bank or credit card
account numbers, or supplier account numbers, particularly through a
widely used public information portal such as whatdotheyknow.com, may
adversely affect data and financial security at the V&A. We have not
identified any public interest in knowing this information. We have
concluded, therefore, that in the circumstances of this case, the public
interest in maintaining the exemption is not outweighed by any public
interest in disclosing the information.

I hope that the information we have provided will be useful to you. In
accordance with the Act, the V&A does have a complaints procedure and if
you are dissatisfied with our response to your request you may make a
complaint, in the first instance to myself as the museum’s FOI Officer. If
your complaint is not handled to your satisfaction you also have the right
to refer the matter to the Information Commissioner.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher Marsden
