Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Under Regulation 34(2)(a) of the Universal Credit Regulations 2013, the SoS can reduce the amount of childcare charges brought into account if she considers them to be excessive having regard to the extent to which the claimant is engaged in paid work.

Please can you provide any analysis and/or statistics held by the Department regarding how this provision is being used in practice. Please also provide any guidance issued by the Department to DMs on this matter beyond what is included in the ADM or placed by the Department in the House of Commons Library.

Yours faithfully,

Charles Ellinson
