Exact death numbers solely from Covid 19

M Jones made this Freedom of Information request to Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

We're waiting for M Jones to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust,

How many people have died in your hospitals from Covid 19 alone? To be clear they have died from Covid 19 only, and were not suffering from any underlying conditions at the time of their death. Your trust publishes figures online but these refer to deaths with 28 days of a positive Covid test and they could have died from other causes.

Please could you provide the exact figures of people who have died from only Covid 19 and nothing else, from these two time periods;

1st February 2020 to 20th December 2020
20th December to 4th February 2021

Yours faithfully,

M Jones

Freedom of Information Requests

The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is committed to the Freedom of Information Act 2000. However, the NHS is facing unprecedented challenges relating to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic at the current time.

Understandably, our resources have been diverted to support our front-line colleagues who are working tremendously hard to provide care for our patients, and to those in need of our services. We strive to be transparent and to work with an open culture, but at this time when care of our patients and the safety of our staff takes priority, it is likely that responses to some requests for information will be delayed.

We apologise for this, and will endeavour to provide you with as much information as we can, as soon as we are able.

If you have any concerns in this regard, please contact us. You also have the right to complain about the handling of your FOI request to the Information. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Telephone: 0303 123 1113 or 01625 545 700 Web Address: https://ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/off...

Dear Mr Hibberd,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request dated 06/02/2021, which
has been handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

Your request and our response are as follows:

How many people have died in your hospitals from Covid 19 alone? To be
clear they have died from Covid 19 only, and were not suffering from any
underlying conditions at the time of their death. Your trust publishes
figures online but these refer to deaths with 28 days of a positive Covid
test and they could have died from other causes.

Please could you provide the exact figures of people who have died from
only Covid 19 and nothing else, from these two time periods;

1st February 2020 to 20th December 2020

20th December to 4th February 2021

Whilst the trust may hold data regarding the total number of deaths within
the trust, we do not hold the specific information you have requested
about the cause of death.

The trust does not code (clinical) the cause of death as such, this is
completed centrally by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) using the
information on the death certificates.  What will have been coded in the
primary position is the main condition investigated and / or treated
during the episode immediately prior to death (which may or may not be the
same as the cause of death). As an example, a patient who ultimately died
from natural causes would have been admitted to hospital for a particular
reason originally and it is this which would have been coded.

The distinction is also important because patients can die from something
completely undiagnosed while they were alive and the trust clinical coders
do not generally use information produced following death, e.g. death
certificates, post mortem / coroner reports, registrar etc.

However, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) [1]Home - Office for
National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) are responsible for the provision of
mortality statistics for England and Wales.  The ONS have published
responses to FOI enquiries regarding Covid-19 deaths which can be found
via this link
[2]https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transpare...

Further information, including how to search for data by postcode, can be
found via the link below:

[3]https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationa...

Please note that we are providing these links under Section 21 of the FOI
Act – ‘Information reasonably accessible to the applicant via other
means’.

Please be advised that Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust (BTUH) Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
(SHUT) and Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust (MEHT) ceased to exist on
31 March 2020.

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSEFT), which was formed on 1

I hope that the response that the Trust has provided is satisfactory.

Information request has been dealt with you can request an internal
