The request was successful.

Dear Goldsmiths, University of London,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I seek access to the
following information about undergraduate students at Goldsmiths', from the academic year 2008/2009 to the academic year 2013/14.

1. The ethnic origin of students enrolled in undergraduate programmes at Goldsmiths' College listed by academic year - either as raw numbers for each category
of ethnicity (e.g. White British), or as a percentage of total
applicants.

2. The ethnic origin of applicants to undergraduate programmes at Goldsmiths' College listed by academic year - either as raw numbers for each category
of ethnicity (e.g. White British), or as a percentage of total
applicants.

If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using
exemptions in the Data Protection Act, please inform me of that
fact and cite the exemptions used. If some parts of this request
are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the
available data as soon as possible. I would like to receive the
data as a spreadsheet, not as a PDF file.

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to
contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and
assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this
request unmanageable in any way.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have
received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you
within the 20-working day statutory time period.

Yours faithfully,
Morgan Meaker

Find the response to your request in the attached spreadsheet. Note that
there are three tables - one for applicants (which answers part 2 of the
request), one for all students, and one for 1st year students only (the
latter 2 can be used to answer part 1 of the request).

We have suppressed all cells that contain less than 5 individuals per
year, however we have kept the totals. See below:

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000: REFUSAL NOTICE

It is confirmed that the College holds information relevant to this
request.

The information requested is being withheld under the following Exemption:
Exemption 40(2): Personal information.
It is to be noted that this Exemption is not subject to the Public
Interest Test when breach of the Data Protection Principles is claimed.

Goldsmiths is a small institution compared with other higher education
providers. Taking into consideration the level of detail covered by the
request as a whole, the disclosure of some of the information would create
a risk that the identities of the individuals concerned would be revealed
indirectly - in particular if the disclosed information were to fall into
the hands of someone who was, or had previously been, otherwise involved
in the College's affairs. The personal information involved is of such a
nature that it would be the reasonable expectation of the Data Subjects
involved that it would be regarded as confidential.

The College's position is therefore that the disclosure of the level of
detail requested would breach the Data Principles, in that it could lead
to processing of personal data which was not fair and lawful (Principle
1).

If you wish to complain about the way in which this request has been
handled, please see our procedures for [1]Internal Review . If, following
the Internal Review, you are still dissatisfied with the College's
handling of your request, you have a right under section 50 of the Freedom
of Information Act to take this matter to the Information Commissioner.
Please see the [2]ICO's website for further instructions.

Thanks,

Alex Harris
