Equality information on the University of Birmingham Dubai campus

Response to this request is delayed. By law, University of Birmingham should normally have responded promptly and by (details)

Dear University of Birmingham,

I am writing to request disclosure of (1) equality impact assessments carried out in relation to the University if Birmingham's phase 1 and phase 2 developments of the Dubai campus. This should cover equality impact assessments for staff and for students.

I also request (2) the dates at which these assessments were presented to the University Council and the associated minutes.

In relation to the safeguards in place over the use of migrant workers in the construction of the phase 2 campus, I also request (3) disclosure of the questions asked in the University's 'questionnaire' that was provided to their Dubai based contractors, or a copy of that questionnaire. This questionnaire should be available from Tim Jones, who cited the questionnaire in an email to the trade unions on the 13th November 2018.

Furthermore, the University is on record that a number of site 'inspections' have been carried out - I ask for (4) disclosure of when these site inspections were carried out, whether or not University inspectors spoke to local workers, and whether any concerns for their wellbeing were raised internally. This information should be contained in any internal reports provided to the University by Trevor Payne, Director of Estates, following these inspections.

I am writing this request on behalf of the University trade unions on the back of the University refusing to meet with us or provide the above requested information and having exhausted all other routes. Having taken advice we do not believe the equality elements of the University's work in Dubai should be considered commercially sensitive.

Let me know if you need to clarify any of the above points. Please include any internal references in the body of your reply.

Yours faithfully,

James Brackley
