I should be grateful if you would provide the following information on your environmental health department (you may call it by a different name but the main department dealing with the environment).

1. What is the current budget of this department?
2. How many people are employed within this department, please specify the job titles/capacity?
3. What is the total salary cost for this department?
4. How many prosecutions for 'environment' crimes have been made between 2010-2012 (please give yearly figures)?
5. How many of these prosecutions have been successful?
6. What is the total cost of these prosecutions?
7. How much in total has the council received as costs following the prosecution?

For simplicity's sake I will specify that "environment crimes" are any crimes/offences/prosecutions that can be brought under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 or the Environment Act 1995, as amended.

the total salary cost is £424,692.
 
 
- NB: Please note that the information given is for the Environmental
Protection Team which deal with the Legislation specified (Environmental
Protection Act 1990 or the Environment Act 1995) as opposed to the
extended Health and Housing Department

Dear Mr Starch,
 
Further to my email below, please see the below the response to the
remainder of your Freedom of Information Request.
 

How many prosecutions for 'environment' crimes have been made between
2010-2012?

Legal Services were instructed to prosecute for crimes brought under the
Environmental Protection Act 1990 or the Environment Act 1995 on 20
occasions between April 2010 and March 2012 (12 in 2010-2011 and 8 in
2011-2012) which led to 14 cases being issued.

 

How many of these prosecutions have been successful?

The Council were successful in 11 of the 14 cases issued. Two cases were
withdrawn and the Council were unsuccessful in one case.

 

What is the total cost of these prosecutions?

The cost to the Council for the prosecutions was approximately £7,598.
Counsel were also instructed in one case at a cost of £1,500 making the
total cost £9,098.

 

How much in total has the Council received as costs following the
prosecution?

The Council has been awarded a total of £5,880 towards costs following the
successful prosecutions.
