Entry grades of Physics students

Pattison made this Freedom of Information request to University of Leicester

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear University of Leicester,
Please could you tell me the entry grades for all students getting onto F300, F303, F3F5, F360, F3FM, F365, F399 for the last 3 years. A level grades and or any other entry course grades. Indication of type of school/establishment coming from and gender would also be useful if possible.

Yours faithfully,

Pattison

Dear Pattison,

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act. Unfortunately we cannot currently process this as a Freedom of Information request as you are not providing us with enough information. Specifically with regard to your name. The Information Commissioner's Office guidance states the following;

"21. For a request to be valid, the requester must provide enough of their real name to give anyone reading that request a reasonable indication of their identity."

" 25. Any variation of the requester’s title or first name combined with their surname (e.g. Mr Smith or John Smith) will be sufficient to meet this requirement. However, a first name or surname provided in isolation, or a set of initials, will not."

Given that you are only providing us with a first name I'm afraid we cannot currently treat this as a valid request. If you would like to supply your surname we would be more than happy to process your request and supply any information to which you are entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In this instance the 20 working day timeframe will start from the receipt of your full name.

A copy of the ICO guidance can be found here; http://ico.org.uk/~/media/documents/libr...

It is worth noting as well that Freedom of Information only covers recorded information, it does not cover questions around policy decisions except where recorded information that relates to such a request exists.

9th August 2018

Dear Mr Pattison

I write on behalf of the University of Leicester in response to your request, dated 5th July 2018 made under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I can confirm that the University holds most of the information you have requested and our response is contained in the attached spreadsheet in respect of which please note the following:

We are providing the data for each course for each of the three years in a way that shows numbers of students on each course; gender split; background education establishments from which the cohort came; the highest qualifications held by the students by type. We do not hold the actual entry qualifications for each student on these courses upon which the final offers were based and entry confirmed (for eg ABB including physics and maths). In its place we have provided the average tariff score on entry and have indicated where data quality is affected because no tariff scores are available for some entry qualifications.

We have chosen not to supply the information requested about the actual qualifications held by each student on entry because this would create a data line entry for each specific student. We consider this to be the personal data of third parties and from which they might be identified. This decision has been taken on the basis of the s40(2) exemption in the Freedom of Information Act 2000 covering personal data of third parties which is an absolute exemption.

If you have any concerns or wish to complain or appeal about any aspect of this response then in the first instance please contact the University's Data Protection Officer (Mr Parmjit Gill: 0116 229 7946, [email address])

Please be aware that it is also your legal right under Section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act, to apply to the Information Commissioner for a decision whether a request for information made to the University has been dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Act. It should be noted that there is a requirement that there will be no undue delay in making the application and there is an expectation that the complainant will have exhausted the University's internal complaints procedure.

Complaints to the Information Commissioner should be addressed to:

FoI Compliance Team (Complaints)
Wycliffe House
Water Lane
Wilmslow
Cheshire
SK9 5AF

I hope you find this response helpful. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries regarding the above.

Regards,

Christine Taylor
