Entries and Exits

Philip Ridley made this Freedom of Information request to Transport for London This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

Please provide entries and exits for London Overground Stations. You publish Underground station entry and exit data on your website, can you please publish for Overground also? I'm particularly interested in Overground usage at Cheshunt, ORR data doesn't differentiate between Overground and National Rail usage.

Yours faithfully,

Philip Ridley

entry and exit data for London Overground stations, especially Cheshunt
station.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of

also Underground and DLR stations, since 2018.

Furthermore, daily entry and exit data on the TfL network is also
available here: [2]http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply
you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible
to you elsewhere.

Dear FOI,

Thank you, but I was looking for annual entries and exits rather than daily, so that I can establish entries and exits for West Anglia London Overground, in particular for Liverpool Street Station, Hackney Downs and Cheshunt. This data had previously been released, providing annual entries and exits for all London Overground journeys, so I do understand that it is being produced. It would be appreciated if you released and published these documents otherwise we cannot see what is happening to demand on our routes.

In particular, we are interested to discover whether the Cheshunt branch is now as busy as the Enfield Town branch in light of Enfield Town having twice as many peak trains vs Cheshunt.

It would take an extraordinary amount of time to go through daily entry and exits for all 365 days for all three stations, so hopefully you have this information.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Ridley

Dear Philip Ridley

TfL Ref: FOI-3525-2324

Thank you for your follow up request which we received on 4 January 2023.
It has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom
of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Before we process your request, please take a look at the data in the
attached zip file, provided in response to a previous [1]FOI request,
which contains entry and exit data for London Overground stations, from 1
^ January 2019 to 23 ^ July 2023. The data shows instances of passengers
touching in and out at the named station, as well as the use of paper
tickets. Note that all counts under 5 (be they entry or exit) are excluded
from the data under section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, the
exemption that protects against the unfair release of personal data.

Whilst the data is provided daily, you can edit the spreadsheets to show
totals for each year, and filter it by the stations you are interested in.

If this still doesn’t answer your question, to enable us to assist with
your request please provide a specific time period (years or months) that
you would like us to over.

Please note that the 20 working day deadline for responding to your
request will depend on when we receive satisfactory additional information
to help clarify your request. If we hear nothing further from you by 24
January 2023 your response will be treated as a new request.

In the meantime, if you have any queries or would like to discuss your
request, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,

Thank you, but the Oyster tapping details are for Overground and National Rail.

I had previously been sent estimated entries and exits data for Overground only that mirrors the estimates done by ORR, but isolating how many use London Overground only. Without this data it is impossible to assess how busy the Cheshunt Overground Branch is vs the Enfield Town Branch. This is in light of our campaign to increase the number of trains on the Cheshunt branch.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Ridley
