Dear Kingston University,

I request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act:

1) Breakdown of enrolled first-year undergraduate students, sorted by primary nationality, for the academic years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, in total number and in percentage over first-year student body, by Subject, as well as the total number of enrolled first-year undergraduate students by nationality in the University.

2) Breakdown of applicants to undergraduate degrees (four-year Master’s degrees and similar included), sorted by primary nationality, for the academic years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, in total number and in percentage over total number of applicants, by Subject, as well as the total number of applicants to such degrees by nationality in the University.

3) Data on the means of payment of tuition fees of first-year undergraduate students from the EU, including UK, sorted by nationality - in particular, I request information on the amount of students relying on student loans or studentships as compared to those who fully support themselves on personal means. I request this data broken down by Subject, as well as the total data for all first-year undergraduate students in the University, for the same years specified above.

Should the information not be held by nationality, I would kindly request the same data, broken down by fee status (UK, EU non-UK, International), as long as UK students are clearly separated from EU non-UK students.

Yours faithfully,

Alexandra Tieghi

Dear Alexandra,

Further to your recent request for information I am writing to advise that
the University is unable to identify the information required in relation
to your request without further clarification.

To help the University respond I would be grateful if you could confirm
the following details:

1) Breakdown of enrolled first-year undergraduate students, sorted by
primary nationality, for the academic years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014
included, in total number and in percentage over first-year student body,
by Subject, as well as the total number of enrolled first-year
undergraduate students by nationality in the University.

How should we define subject as we would like to ensure that the data we
provide is comparable with other institutions. Would the HESA JACs codes
(see [1]this link)detailed here be a suitable breakdown? If so, what
should we do with joint honours awards?

2) Breakdown of applicants to undergraduate degrees (four-year Master’s
degrees and similar included), sorted by primary nationality, for the
academic years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, in total number and in
percentage over total number of applicants, by Subject, as well as the
total number of applicants to such degrees by nationality in the
University.

·         What do you mean by “Breakdown of applicants to undergraduate
degrees (four-year Master’s degrees and similar included)”? Would you like
us to include foundation degrees or just courses with a COURSEAIM of “H00
- First degree with honours” and “M22 - Integrated
undergraduate/postgraduate taught masters degree on the enhanced/extended
pattern” (please check this  [2]link for a definition of this).

·         How would you define an application? Is this anyone who got an
offer, anyone who accepted an offer or anyone who went through any stage
of the application process (this would include those who withdrew their
application).

Please note that if we do not receive clarification from you within three
months from the date of this email your request will be considered closed.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards,

Lyn

Dear Lyn Porteous,

Thank you for your reply.

Regarding question 1):
JACs codes for "Principal Subject" would be perfect, thanks, and I would ask to count 0.5 per subject students on Joint degrees.

Regarding question 2):
Please do include both H00 and M22.
I would ask for data for everybody who went through any step of the application process.

I hope this clarifies it.

Yours sincerely,

Alexandra Tieghi

primary nationality, for the academic years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014
included, in total number and in percentage over first-year student body,
by Subject, as well as the total number of enrolled first-year

Please see the attached spreadsheet. Please note that we have reported <5

the exemption at s. 40 of the Freedom of Information Act in that the data
requested constitutes personal data, the disclosure of which would
contravene the first data principle of the Data Protection Act.

2)      Breakdown of applicants to undergraduate degrees (four-year
Master’s degrees and similar included), sorted by primary nationality, for

percentage over total number of applicants, by Subject, as well as the

3)      Data on the means of payment of tuition fees of first-year
undergraduate students from the EU, including UK, sorted by nationality -
