Enrollments and Graduations
Dear University of Worcester,
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
I would like to request the following information to be based on figures for enrolments and graduations.
Since the university opened how many students have ever enrolled?
Of these students how many graduated?
Of these students how many are currently studying?
Of these students how many dropped out?
I would be most interested in any information held by your organisation regarding my request.
Yours faithfully,
Kathryn Emerson

Dear Ms Emerson
Further to your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act please can you provide some clarification in order for us to provide the data.
1. You ask for student numbers since the University opened - the institution has existed since the 1940s do you mean since we gained University title in 2005?
2. Can you clarify your interpretation of 'graduated' - do you mean those that completed their course of study, or those that attended an award ceremony, or those that gained an award. A student can gain an award even though they haven’t completed their studies but it may be a lesser qualification.
3. 'currently studying' - does this include students who have intercalated?
4. 'dropped out' - is this students who have chosen to withdraw? Does this include academic failure where the University has required them to withdraw? Does this include students who have chosen to transfer to other Universities, or other courses elsewhere in the University.
If you could provide clarification of the above we will be able to process your request.
Regards
Helen Johnstone

Dear Helen Johnstone,
Thank you very much for your reply.
to clarify:
1. I require university numbers for as far back as they go, if there are records accessible for the 1940s-present then I would like to know that as well as from 2005-present.
2. By 'graduated' I mean those that completed there course of study. However if possible I would also like the statistics for those who gained other awards.
3. yes this can include those who are intercalated. however it would be of note to also provide the statistic without.
4. by 'dropped out' I am referring to any reason whereby the student has left the university part way into a course. this could include students who have chosen to withdraw, academic failure where the University has required them to withdraw and students who have chosen to transfer to other Universities. however does not need to include students who have moved to other courses elsewhere in the University.
Yours sincerely,
Kathryn Emerson

Dear Ms Emerson
Further to your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act our response is as follows:
The organisation has existed since 1947 but became a full University in 2005 so we have taken this as the date for "since the University opened".
- since September 2005 we have 60,871 unique student records which means that 60,871 individuals have joined to undertake a course of some form these can include one off modules and short courses which do not necessarily leave with an award
- of these 35,939 left with their intended award
- of these 11,543 withdrew from their course before completion, although of these 1076 gained a partial award but not the one they initially intended to achieve
- there are 10,498 students registered to study for 2015/16, of these 164 are intercalating.
I am obliged, under the Freedom of Information Act, to inform you of our complaints procedures in case you are unhappy about the way in which your request has been dealt with.
