English A*-C performance table statistics at KS4 for summer 2016

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Education,

My question relates to the A* to C measure in 2016 with current Year 11 taking the old English specs for English Literature and English Language:

For students on this pathway that have taken English Language or English Literature in Year 10, and who will take the other one in Year 11, will it only be the first sitting of English Language that is counted on the A*-C measure (regardless of whether it was taken in Year 10 of 2015 or Year 11 in 2016) OR will it be the better of the two qualifications that count for the A*-C OR is the first sitting of either qualification that counts?

Yours faithfully,

Dr R H Speller

Department for Education

Dear Dr Speller,
Thank you for your enquiry. You asked: “My question relates to the A* to C measure in 2016 with current Year 11 taking the old English specs for English Literature and English Language:

“For students on this pathway that have taken English Language or English Literature in Year 10, and who will take the other one in Year 11, will it only be the first sitting of English Language that is counted on the A*-C measure (regardless of whether it was taken in Year 10 of 2015 or Year 11 in 2016) OR will it be the better of the two qualifications that count for the A*-C OR is the first sitting of either qualification that counts?”

As your request is not seeking access to recorded information, we are responding to it outside of the Freedom of Information Act.

In 2016, in order to meet the English requirement of the A*-C in English and maths attainment measure, pupils much achieve a C or above in either English language or English literature. There is no requirement to take both qualifications to achieve the English requirement of the A*-C in English and maths measure.

For other English measures, such as the English element of the English Baccalaureate, exams in both English language and English literature must be taken and a C grade or above achieved in either English language or English literature. In Progress 8 and Attainment 8, there is no requirement to take both qualifications, but the best result will be double weighted if a pupil has taken both. Information on the English qualifications which count as English can be found in the List of Qualifications that Count in the EBacc here: http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/perf...

In all cases, for pupils taking exams in 2015 and 2016, the exams which count towards the performance tables will be the pupil’s first attempt at the qualification. For example, if a pupil took English literature in year 10 in 2015, and then took English language for the first time, and re-sat English literature in year 11 in 2016, the pupil would need to achieve a C or above in either the English literature qualification taken in 2015, or the English language taken in 2016, to achieve the English requirement of the A*-C in English and maths measure. Information on discounting can be found in the discounting guidance on RAISEonline, under “further details of the revised performance tables qualifications, discount rules and early entry guidance”: https://www.raiseonline.org/documentlibr...
