Freedom of Information Officer, St John's College, Cambridge

Dear James Leemore,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request concerning Engineering
applicants to St John’s College in the 2020 application year.

To comply with your precise request would require the processing of the
personal data of individual applicants for a purpose other than that for
which it was obtained and would therefore conflict with the Data
Protection Principles. However, we hope the following information will
prove useful.

1) Achieved GCSE grades of Engineering applicants ranged from 13 A* to
one A*, one A and 7 other grades.

2) Predicted A Level grades and equivalent qualification grades of
Engineering applicants:

* predicted A Level grades ranged from four A* to A*, A and B.
* predicted International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) grades ranged from
40 to 45.
* predicted Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (PEIA) grades
ranged from four A* to three A*.

Please note that a small number of applicants took qualifications from
more than one examination board. The data above is for applicants who took
qualifications from only one examination board.

Some qualifications were taken by only a very small number of Engineering
applicants. Providing predicted grade ranges for these qualifications
creates a real risk of the individuals involved being identified. Mindful
of this risk of inadvertently exposing sensitive personal data, I can
offer the following summary list of other qualifications which Engineering
applicants submitted predicted grades for:

* New Matura (PNMATURA) - Poland.
* Vysvedceni o Maturitni Zkouce (VOMZ) - Czech Republic.
* Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie (DIPZO) - Bulgaria.
* Apolyterio (CAPOL) - Cyprus.
* Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced
Level (SIPCAL) - Singapore.
* SQA Advanced Highers (AH).
* Advanced Extension Award (AE)
* Indian School Certificate (ISC).
* Oxford International AQA A Level (IA).
* Cambridge International Examinations A Level (I5).
* International Baccalaureate Certificate (CI).
* Canada-Alberta-High School Diploma (CAHSD).
* Baccalauréat - France.
* Cambridge Pre-U Certificate.
* Scholastic Aptitude Testing (SATs).
* Advanced Placement (AP) – USA and Canada.

For information, some Engineering applicants also hold or were predicted
qualifications in one or more of the following:

* Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA).
* Duke of Edinburgh Award (DoE).
* A musical instrument qualification.
* Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - a qualification taken by some
students in England and Wales, which is equivalent to 50% of an A
Level.

3a) The results for Engineering Admissions Assessment (ENGAA) Section 1A:
Mathematics and Physics multiple-choice questions ranged from 1.0 to 9.0.

3b) The results for Engineering Admissions Assessment (ENGAA) Section 1B:
Advanced Mathematics and Advanced Physics multiple-choice questions ranged
from 1.0 to 9.0.
3c) The results for Engineering Admissions Assessment (ENGAA) Section 2:
Advanced Physics multiple-choice questions ranged from 1.0 to 9.0.

4) The overall interview scores of Engineering applicants ranged
from 4.1 to 8.7.

5) Of the 176 Engineering applicants:

* 21 received an offer from St John's;
* 47 were pooled; and
* 108 were rejected.

For clarity the 2020 application year ran from applications opening in
September 2019 to confirmation in August 2020 and includes applicants for
standard entry in 2020 and deferred entry in 2021.

If you are dissatisfied with my response you may seek an internal review
in writing setting out the grounds for review. It will be dealt with by a
College Officer. Should you not be satisfied with the outcome of the
review, you will have a right of appeal to the Information Commissioner by
writing to him at Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water
Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely,
