Dear Mary Atkinson,
We refer to your email of 17 April 2023 in which you requested information
under the FOI Act from NHS England.
Your request
You made the following request:
“Please disclose the number of endometrial ablations carried out by NHS
trusts in England for every year from 2018 to 2022 inclusive, and from 01
January 2023 to the date on which this request is responded to.”
Decision
NHS England holds the information you have requested.
Please note that Hospital Episode Statistics data is collected in arrears.
As of the date of your request, NHS England only holds data on activity
taking place up to and including February 2023. We have therefore provided
a count of Finished Consultant Episodes (FCEs) at NHS Trusts where there
was an Endometrial ablation procedure recorded, from
January-2018-February-2023:
Calendar Year Episodes (FCEs)
2018 7,686
2019 7,107
2020 3,976
2021 3,790
2022 3,848
2023 (Jan-Feb) 582
Please be aware that any data relating to activity taking place from April
2022 or later is provisional and potentially subject to change as it is
finalised. Please also note that these figures represent a count of
activities rather than patients, and the same person may be recorded more
than once if they have had multiple hospital visits.
The following OPCS procedure codes were used to identify endometrial
ablations:
Q16.2 Balloon ablation of endometrium
Q16.3 Microwave ablation of endometrium NEC
Q16.4 Free circulating saline ablation of endometrium
Q16.5 Radiofrequency ablation of endometrium
Q16.6 Photodynamic ablation of endometrium
Q17.6 Endoscopic microwave ablation of endometrium
Q17.7 Endoscopic balloon ablation of endometrium
