Empty Homes Grants

The request was successful.

Dear South Lakeland District Council,

At South Lakeland you offer a grant of up to £20,000 to owners of long term Empty Homes in return for the property being rented out as affordable housing for a 5 yr. period. I would greatly appreciate feedback on the number of empty properties brought back into use as a result of this incentive by financial year

Yours faithfully,

R D White

Dear R D White,

I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the Council under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. You asked the following:

Feedback on the number of empty properties brought back into use as a result of this incentive by financial year

I can confirm the following:

The Empty Homes Grant Management Scheme was launched, in partnership with South Lakes Housing in 2014/15. At that time, one property was brought back into use as affordable housing and the same family are still tenants in this property. There was no more funding available for the financial years 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Funding was again available for 2017/18 to potentially bring 3 more properties back into use. This time the scheme was re-launched to be more flexible and to attract more owners. The option for owners to 'match-fund' the costs of repairs exceeding the maximum £20,000 grant (up to an extra £20,000) was added to the scheme, along with an 'early-exit' option after 2, 3 or 4 years, with a payback of grant plus financial penalty for early exit. The locations were also increased to attract more owners - previously it had been aimed at the two big towns in our area - Kendal and Ulverston. So far this year we have been working with three empty home owners who are interested in our scheme, each owner in a different location.
