Empty buildings
Dear Newham Borough Council,
For 2022 and 2023 (year to date:
1) How many empty property reports have Newham received
2) How many individual properties did these reports relate to (as multiple people may have reported the same property)
3) Of these properties, how many were commercial and how many residential, how many classes as anything else
3A) If some properties are yet to be classified, how many
4) How many of the properties were deemed as legitimately empty Newham properties (as opposed to for example, non-empty properties or not Newham properties incorrectly reported)
4A: If some property reports are still awaiting classification as legitimately empty or not, what is the number of properties awaiting classification
5) Of the properties deemed legitimate empty Newham properties, for how many had someone from Newham Council (or an entity contracted by Newham) been out to view the property.
I don’t require the addresses of any properties, just numbers.
Yours faithfully,
A. Dremach

Dear London Borough of Newham,
Thank you for your email.
To clarify, I am asking in the first instance about empty properties that the council has been notified of by someone else - via a complaint for example, the form on the Newham website, etc. However, if you are able to supply these I would also be interested in the figures incorporating the overall reports that the council holds (as you mentioned, from sources like council tax records).
Yours sincerely,
A. Dremach

Dear London Borough of Newham,
Thank you for response, unfortunately some of your responses aren’t clear.
In all instances, I asked for the numbers for both 2022 and for 2023 so far. Is the 53 figure for 2022, 2023 year to date, or both together? There is mention of a March date but I’m not sure what that relates to - please can you clarify?
Based on the answer to question 5, does this mean that 0 properties have been visited by someone from Newham council or someone contracted by Newham council?
I would appreciate your clarification on these points.
Yours sincerely,
A. Dremach

Dear Mr Dremach,
Thank you again for your email. I can answer your queries as follows:
You asked: in all instances, I asked for the numbers for both 2022 and for
2023 so far. Is the 53 figure for 2022, 2023 year to date, or both
together? There is mention of a March date but I'm not sure what that
relates to - please can you clarify?
We have checked our system and the figure provided is 'as at 13/03/2023'.
In 2022, we received no online reports between 01/01/2022 and 31/12/2022.
For information, as at 31/07/2023, we had received 67 online forms since
01/01/2023.
You said: based on the answer to question 5, does this mean that 0
properties have been visited by someone from Newham council or someone
contracted by Newham council?
I am sorry this answer was not clear. When classifying a property as
empty, our usual procedure is to make contact with the owners or by
checking Council records. Having rechecked our records, I can confirm our
of the previously mentioned 53 empty properties reported online, 9 have
been visited.
I trust this fully responds to your enquiry.
Yours sincerely,
Information Rights Team
