Employment statistics at the University of Leeds by ethnicity and gender

The request was partially successful.

Dear University of Leeds,

Please could you provide me with a statistical breakdown of the following for the last 5 academic years in numbers:

* Breakdown of all academic teaching staff based on ethnicity - White, Asian, Black, and Other.

* Breakdown of executives in top-level jobs based on ethnicity - White, Asian, Black, and Other.

* The average salary of each ethnic group - White, Asian, Black and Other.

* Number of Black staff employed at the University broken down by Gender

This would preferably be presented in a spreadsheet.

I would appreciate that you provide any notes which might be necessary to understand the context of the information provided, although I recognize that you are not obliged to do this.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Barnes

Jenny Foggin,

I am on leave and will not return until Tuesday 18 September. If your email is urgent, please contact the Secretariat for advice on 343 4036.

Jenny Foggin,

Dear Mr Barnes,

The University does not have 'academic teaching staff' as a staff category, but data concerning the ethnic background of all our academic staff is published on our website (see https://equality.leeds.ac.uk/equality-da...).

Can you clarify for me, please, what you mean by 'executives in top-level jobs'? There is some information about University structures and governance on-line if this is helpful: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130521/freed....

I will then provide a response on the outstanding questions 20 working days from when I receive clarification on that latter point.

Many thanks,

Jenny

Dear Jenny Foggin,

I sincerely apologize for the lack of clarification in my first request.

With regards to academic staff, I am sincerely grateful for the link you have provided for the ethnic breakdown of all academic staff. However, the statistics do include postgraduate research students.

Therefore, I would wish to have a breakdown in numbers based on ethnicity for those whose roles are Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Leeds. This would be the same categories as before: Black, Asian, White, and Other.
These statistics would not include those undertaking postgraduate degrees, lecturers, senior lecturers, teaching fellows, and research fellows/assistants.

I apologize again for not clarifying this earlier.

In relation to your second query, I would like to know the ethnic breakdown of the various governing organizations in numbers individually based on the previous criteria (Black, Asian, White, and Other).

These governing bodies are:
- The Council
- The University Executive Group

In addition, I would like the same for the following committees (all the following in total, not each committee individually) broken down in numbers based on the previous criteria (Black, Asian, White, Other):
- the strategy and investment committee (chair: Deputy Pro-Chancellor, Mr Quentin Woodley)
- the audit and risk committee (chair: Mr Ed Anderson)
- the health and safety committee (chair: Vice-Chancellor)
- the nominating and governance committee (chair: Pro-Chancellor)
- remuneration committee (chair: Pro-Chancellor)
- gift acceptance committee (chair: Pro-Chancellor)

Please feel free to contact me with any more queries.

Yours sincerely,

Edward Barnes

Dear Mr Barnes

Further to your email below and my colleague's earlier response, the University does not have 'academic teaching staff' as a staff category, but data concerning the ethnic background of all our academic staff is published on our website (see https://equality.leeds.ac.uk/equality-da...). Given the numbers involved, a breakdown of executives based on ethnicity would risk identification of individuals and is therefore exempt under Section 40(2) of the FOIA.

The spreadsheet attached provides the average salary for each ethnic group and the number of black staff broken down by gender.

I hope this is helpful in resolving your query. If you have any questions about this email, however, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision, you should write to or email directly Mr D Wardle, Deputy Secretary, The University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT ([email address]). You should do so within 40 working days of receiving the University’s response to your request. Further information about how the University manages Freedom of Information requests and about our complaints procedure is also available on our website (www.leeds.ac.uk).

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.  Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the review/complaints procedure provided by the University.  The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:  Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
